William H. Lillard Jr. NORFOLK - William "Big Bill" Lillard passed away peacefully Friday, June 26, 2009, at his home. In the end, he triumphed over Alzheimer's, never losing his spirit or sense of humor. His precious wife of 58 years, Shirley and his four beloved daughters, Mary Anne, Paula, Diana and Patricia, were at his bedside as was his devoted caregiver and friend, DeeDee and his four-paw angel, Heidi. He leaves 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild to cherish his memory. He was born in Canton, Mo., and joined the United States Navy where he proudly served 27 years as a chief petty officer. He was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church. He leaves a legacy of service to the Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Masons, Shriners and the Galax Moose Club. Some of his greatest times were at Bill and Shirley's River Rat home on the New River in Galax, Va. He was lovingly known as the Mayor of the Fiddlers Convention along with his trusty honorary police dog, Jenny-Bo. Bill never met a stranger. He was a big man with a big heart who delighted helping others with his fix-it skills. His laughter will continue to echo through shared memories. All services will be private.
