William Winn Obituary
Norfolk - William Carter Winn, 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home at Harbor's Edge. A Norfolk native, he was the son of the late Wirt Leland Winn and Hilda Lane Winn. He was predeceased by his wife and love of his life, Doris. He was also predeceased by his brother, Wendall L. Winn.
Bill graduated from Maury High School in 1941. He attended North Carolina State College for 2 years before leaving to serve in the Army Air Corp during W. W. II. He was a tail gunner on a B-29 completing 29 missions over Japan and 2 POW supply missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. After his service he returned to N.C. State where he graduated with a BS in landscape architecture from the School of Design.
Bill was a landscape architect and past president of Winn Nursery, Inc., founded by his grandfather, Alexander C. Winn in 1885. He was, also, past president of the Virginia Nurserymen's Association and a founding member/past president of the Northside Rotary Club. Bill served on the boards of the Boy's Club of Norfolk, and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. He was an active member since 1963 of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, and golf, but most of all loved his family and many friends.
Bill is survived by his sister, Nancy James and husband, Tucky; his daughter, Lane Winn Rothschild and husband, John of Columbus, Ohio; his sons, William Carter Winn, Jr. and wife, Dorothy, and James MacDougall Winn and wife, Dinky; five grandchildren, Ginny Rothschild, Drew Rothschild and wife, Natalie, Virginia, Kendall, and Anna Winn; one great grandchild, Gabriela Rothschild; and a special angel, Margaret Keys.
The family would like to thank his hospice nurses, caregivers, and those who cared for him at Harbor's edge.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17th at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with Rev. James Medley officiating. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com.

Bill and Doris were lovebirds, and our children
were in school together years ago. Both were such special people. Bill was a wonderful friend and person. He will be missed.

To Carter and Jimmy...
I extend my sincere condolences to your family in this time of remembering Mr. Bilol.
He was a real hero to me when I was first starting out in the horticultural world.
He helped in my search for my first accountant.
He was a model businessman showing how to give back to the community, state and profession.

I am so saddened to hear of your father's passing. Your father and mother were such an integral part of the "Currituck Country Club" with my parents, and I always look back so fondly at all the fun they had together as well as the fun times I enjoyed with you when we were kids. We were blessed to have you as neghbors. My heartfelt condolences to all in the Winn famiy.
