Alcie M. Williams
CHILLICOTHE - Alcie Mae Faust Williams, 97, born in Butler County, AL on Nov. 28, 1919 to Dearl and Emma Faust, died April 9, 2017, at Heritage Health, Chillicothe. Family was at her side the week she died.
Alcie lived Christ's precepts. She married Sgt. Elgee Jay Williams, 81st Infantry, Dec. 5, 1942, in Andalusia, AL. Before following "Bill" to CA, Alcie had never been out of AL. Sent to Ranger training in Hawaii, Bill did not see their first child until she was 13 months old and he returned from the Battles of Anguar and Pelilieu. Daughter Janet was born after Bill ran his brakeless borrowed car into the hospital wall. Ever hospitable, feeding hoboes and stranded railroaders, Alcie housed a runaway until the girl graduated. Talented at sewing, Alcie loved to read and told of churning butter slower and slower, lost in a book. A tireless caregiver named for a WWI nurse during the flu epidemic, she phoned her siblings and children daily. Even in illness she held a daughter's hands because they felt cold. Alcie saw the lower 48 but would not fly over an ocean. She and her sister Doris, "the Rocket Sisters," drove to AL until their late 80s. She traveled by ox wagon and jet but loved road trips and rambling the woods, gathering berries, walnuts, pecans, or scup'nong. Alcie worked at Alatex Shirt Co., Ben Franklin, Penney's, and Foster Gallagher. A member of Martha Washington Eastern Star, once a Worthy Matron, she was a charter member of Rome Baptist Church, teaching for many years. Alcie's friendships crossed racial and age lines, and she kept them from girlhood. Sweet, quiet, and Southern, Alcie was a lady, witty, smart, devoted, selfless, kind, thoughtful. With her terrific memory, Alcie could navigate back anywhere she had ever been. At 72 she earned a GED.
Preceded in death by parents, four brothers, a sister, and her husband, she is survived by daughters Pam (Don) Angerhofer, Western Springs, IL, and Jan Jones, Chillicothe, a sister, Doris Underwood, Chillicothe, and a brother, Gary (Frances) Faust, Andalusia, AL. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Peter (Melissa) Angerhofer, Stratham, NH, Carissa (Jeff) Means, Burr Ridge, IL, Will and Ty Jones, CO, and four great grandchildren, J.D. and Maddox Angerhofer, Stratham, NH, and Lucas and Lindley Means, Burr Ridge, IL. Also surviving are many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and many dear cousins.
The world is better for Alcie's life.
Cremation rites have been accorded with burial in Sunrise Cemetery, Greenville, AL. A memorial service and luncheon are planned for noon at Rome Baptist Church on June 11, 2017.
