I met Ben in college at the U. of Illinois; and he later became my roommate in the dorm at Allen Hall. We had many enjoyable experiences in college talking about music (a lot of jazz, but also many other things) and of course, photography. We were in a photography class together and were assigned to use those large format cameras (that are very rarely used today), an experience that helps develop one's eye as you do not actually take too many pictures with those cameras. Over the years we exchanged many letters, music albums, photographs, and had some terrific experiences. Our letters were always interesting, they involved some obscure reference to music or literature; we got each other to think with humor and joy. One particularly interest adventure was our canoe trip in the lake in Canada, really fun until the rains came... Years later Ben was in my wedding party, and his pictures from the event are, of course, my favorites. I still can hardly believe that he is gone as my memories of Ben are so vivid and clear. It is so nice to hear these stories of Ben recorded here. Living at such a distance, I never got any tomatoes, but his cat pictures in the mail, now each framed on my wall, still make me smile. Thanks for posting to you all.

I worked with Ben for sometime at WMBD and exclusively as a reporter for 7 months on the early morning shift. After Ben's time at WMBD, I would occasionally find a box of freshly picked tomatoes sitting at my doorstep. He'd picked them from his garden and would drop them off. He knew I'd know it was him. Must've done it 3 or 4 times. Rest well, Ben.

There wasn't a more kind, thoughtful, and energetic cameraman at channel 31. He was always willing to go-the-extra-mile. Oh, he'd grumble many a time, but I'd marvel at how his professionalism would kick in no matter how-minor-the-story. And, yes, he didn't have a green thumb, he had a green arm. Thank you for that wonderful obit...and so, so true: "....singular style...." What a life he led, what a guy, he'll always be fondly remembered. Weren't we lucky to be in his orbit for so long?

I was a morning producer and Ben was my photog. He would always bring in bread or something he cooked up to share. I am truly saddened to hear about his passing. We initially bonded after he discovered I'd called in sick to go to an LCD Soundsystem concert. He emailed me his favorite song - Someone Great... which strangely enough, happens to be about the passing of a friend. I remember being surprised because here I was, a 21 year old who just started just a few weeks before and he not only sent me the song, he told me why it was his favorite, what it meant to him and he ended with saying: Really makes you think, huh? I am listening to it now and have and always will think of him when it comes on. Hugs to all xx

So sad to hear this news. I still smile when I think of the funny things Ben would always kid me about when we worked our beats in Peoria at WMBD. I always brown bagged my lunch. "How do you know when your yogurt spoils?" he'd asked me. When I got married, he gave me a beautiful bowl he'd made plus a case of Big K cola, my favorite drink at that time on a cub reporter's salary. He always stuck to his principles and brought his talent and unique insight to every story he covered. RIP Ben Dwyer, I will try to find a Big K Cola and raise it to you!

Ben, you were such a unique, intelligent, hilarious and talented man. I have many postcards and letters from you, saved from years ago. Thanks for all the plants you gave me. You helped me to love and grow a garden of my own. Thanks for being family, I’m sorry we drifted apart. Sending sympathy to your family. Love, Karen Shields

So sad to hear of Ben’s passing. I moved to California after High School and Ben came out to visit. He sent me many wonderful cards of historical Peoria and peoples. We had many fun nights playing Risk into the night. A great guy always a good friend. Much love to his family. Rest In Peace Ben. With Love, Katherine Kennedy
