Chester Sanger

PEORIA - Chester "Chet" H. Sanger, age 80, of Peoria passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012, with his family at his side at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Chet was born on March 20, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Samuel and Sally (Lipson) Sanger. He married Jean Gilchrist on Aug. 15, 1959, in Atlanta, Ga. Chet is survived by his wife, Jean; his two daughters, Tanya Sanger of Blue Springs, Mo., and Karen (George) Sargeant of Park Ridge, Ill.; three grandchildren, Lauren, George and Daniel; and two sisters, Adele Glass of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Muriel Sirken of Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chet attended Temple University on a football scholarship, served in the United States Army during the Korean War and received his MBA from Emory University.

He was a certified licensed underwriter and chartered financial consultant for Principle Financial Group. Chet was also a member of the Peoria Lions Club, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Peoria Area World Affairs Council and the IVY Club, American Legion Post 2 and the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria.

Cremation rites will be accorded, and services will be held Sunday, May 20, 2012, at 4 p.m. at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home in Peoria. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC), 1501 W. Bradley Ave., Peoria, IL 61625, or the Peoria Lions Club, P.O. Box 1492, Peoria, IL 61655.

I among many appreciate Chet's valiant and eloquent service to the Peoria ACLU board.

I am sure that his wife Jean and his family will keep what was good in him alive in them,
