WATAGA - Harold J. Bindel, 96, of Wataga died at 2:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg. He resided with his daughters over the past 10 years.
He was born April 4, 1915, in LaMar, Mo., the son of Joseph and Magdalene (Weske) Bindel. He married Elfreda R. Boerger on Feb. 17, 1942, at Salisbury, Mo. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Surviving are three daughters, Kay (LeRoy) Shoop of Wataga, Sandra (Charles) Young of Peoria and Shirley (Ron) Williams of East Moline; one son, Jerry (Kevin) Bindel of Rogersville, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, Lori Ponce and Amy Donovan of Galesburg, Alicia (Ken) Erdman, Mary (Kyle) Horn and Abbey Young of Peoria, Spencer (Lyn) Young of Springfield, Luke Young of Louisville, Ky., Erik (Natalie) Malvik of Springfield and Jean (Jason) Wardlow of Coal Valley, Joe Bindel and Rebecca Bindel of Kansas City, Mo.; 13 great-grandchildren, Courtney Donovan, Kelvin Hawthorne, Hannah and Brennah Ellis, Kendra, Andrew and Janelle Erdman, Tyson Horn, Joseph, Matthew and Coy Young, and Ethan and Ella Wardlow; stepgrandchildren, including Brian (Erica) Williams, Nicole (Brad) Elwell and Misti (Mark) Williams; and stepgreat-grandchildren including Jessica, Kalliene and Reese Williams; and two half sisters, Sarah Silvers in Pennsylvania and Irene Dempsey in Missouri.
His parents and four brothers preceded him in death.
Harold farmed in the Knoxville and Spoon River areas. He also worked at the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Office in Galesburg.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and was a past elder, usher and member of the building committee.
He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, being with his family, watching TV and the stock market and gardening.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will take place in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
