MANITO - Harold Edwin Thompson, 86, of 107 Market St., Manito, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Pekin Hospital.
He was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Quiver Township, near Havana, the son of John E. and Mary Stroud Thompson.
He married Donna J. Singley on July 19, 1947, in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Switzer of Manito; one son, Eric (Anna Marie) Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Dr. Erika (Jason) Switzer-Hunter and John C. Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; and two great-grandsons, Wilson Thompson Hunter and Jakob Dean Hunter, both of Manito.
One brother, William Thompson, preceded him in death.
Harold was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, enlisting in 1945 after graduating from high school. He served in North China at the end of World War II and belonged to the China-Marine Association.
He was a member and past post commander of the Hill-Palmer American Legion Post 561 in Manito.
He owned and operated businesses in Manito for several years and served as the village of Manito justice of the peace until that office was no longer in effect. He served 24 years on the Mason County Board of Supervisors, retiring in 2002. He served on the Meadow Lawn Cemetery Board and was a Mason County Republican precinct committeeman in Manito for many years. He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Manito.
There will be no visitation. Cremation rites will be accorded. A private inurnment of his cremains will be held at a later date at Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito.
Memorial contributions in Harold's honor may be made to the Manito Community Methodist Church or to the Manito Historical Society. Maas-Hurley Funeral Home in Manito is assisting the family with arrangements. To express online condolences go to www.hurleyfh.com.
