Jack Bensing
Jack Bensing
EAST PEORIA - Jack A. Bensing died peacefully at RLO Hospice Home in Peoria, Illinois, on Friday, October 9, 2020, surrounded by his wife and children. The love he shared with his family was as palpable in the room at the moment of his death as it was throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion (Hunt) Bensing and H. Orville Bensing; and his sister, Barbara Bensing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years. Patricia (Foley) Bensing. They were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church, on August 17, 1969. Jack was the proud father of Karen (Scott) Skaggs, Julie (Anthony) Mills and Alan (Lucy) Bensing. He was equally proud of his 5 grandchildren, Madison, Tyler, Mekaul, Kysic and Donovin.
Jack loved to learn. He gravitated toward computer science and math and his passion for computers, in particular, led him to found multiple businesses and to teach and inspire many students over the years at Peoria High School, Bradley University and Illinois Central College. Jack's innovative ideas in computer programming were well known. Various businesses, local hospitals and personal friends called on him regularly to provide solutions to a wide variety of computer problems they encountered.
Jack and Pat shared a love story for the ages. The love letters they exchanged are family treasures and their love produced a beautiful family that collectively was the apple of Jack's eye. He was a wonderful provider and his family was the center of his life.
Jack was an insightful problem solver. He loved using logic to work his way through decisions. He loved to play as hard as he worked and he didn't know a stranger. As such, his life was full of adventures with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling across the United States with his family and visiting popular landmarks in each state. Jack was also a Master Scuba Diver and enjoyed diving throughout the Caribbean.
Jack was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church, where he served as a an Elder, an Operation Inspiration youth leader and a Communicants class teacher. Jack's spirituality was present each day in every action that he undertook. His faith provided a foundation for the resilience he demonstrated throughout his life.
Jack was a 27-year brain cancer survivor. The grace, strength and dignity that Jack demonstrated through his experience with cancer was awe inspiring. He overcame great challenges through the years in order to continue to communicate with and inspire those around him. Jack and his family became involved with the Brain Injury Group of Peoria, the Wednesday Cancer Support Group and the annual Mark Linder Walk for the Mind. Jack's incredible influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
Jack Bensing's life was a life well lived. The lessons he taught by his example: Resilience, Courage, Strength, Humor and Love will live on in the people that he loved.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to United Presbyterian Church; Jack/Orville Bensing Scholarship, in care of ICC Foundation; or Mark Linder Walk For the Mind.
The service will be held privately at United Presbyterian Church on October 13. A link to the service will be available for viewing.

I was a student of Jack's way back in the day. Jack was a role model for all of us, in his humor, sincerity and thoughtfulness and just being a great human being. Thanks Jack.

Jack was one of my favorite instructors at ICC because of the caring he provided when some of us may have needed extra help. He was always there. When I think about the instructors I've had in my life, Jack is always one of the first to come to mind.

He even made it out a number of times (with his partner in crime - Denny Irwin) to listen to the band I was in at the time. He was as genuine outside of the classroom as he was inside. He will leave a lasting legacy.

Jack would always accompany Pat to her Woodruff HS 1965 Class Reunions. I always considered Jack an adopted member of our class. From the obituary and the Guest Book entries, his life was truly well lived. Thoughts and prayers to the Bensing Family.

Mr. Bensing tutored me during his free time while I was a student at Peoria High. We met several times a week. I wouldn’t have passed Algebra without his help. I became a Registered Nurse and needed the Algebra credits in order to attend nursing school. I will be forever grateful and honored to have known such an exceptional person and teacher. My condolences to his family.

Jack and I graduated Peoria High together. Even during those years, I would have expected his life to be lived as his obituary stated. A kind and gentleman even then! Later in life our paths continued to cross as my husband formed a friendship with Jack over the years he was involved with the Hult Center. Steve came home telling me about this wonderful man he met and I knew it was none other than Jack Bensing! A life well lived and shared with his wonderful wife and family. What a blessing to have known him. Rest in peace, my friend in the arms of your heavenly Father.

Praying for comfort for your family in the coming days.

Mr. Bensing was my absolute favorite teacher at ICC in 1978-1979, as he prepared me for a career in software development. He had a great smile and I'll never forget him.

Rest in peace Mr. Bensing

I will always remember Jack as a very kind and fun guy from high school years, from the years that our sons played on the same hockey team, and from the years that Jack and I taught together at ICC. His kindness, strength and courage leave a wonderful example for everyone.

Jack Bensing was a special man. I will never forget a time soon after I arrived at ICC when he came up to me and said you know I like you and you will be a great colleague at ICC. Even though he encountered many health issues in his life he always had a smile on his face for anyone he met. His relationship with his wife Pat and his family was one of pure love. You could see their special relationship each time we were together. I guess you could say Jack Bensing was a man who made the lives of others better and he will be missed. When we meet again i know the lord will say I like Jack Bensing. May he rest in Peace

I had Mr. Bensing for several classes at ICC through a special 9 month Foundation in Computing program. He was a WONDERFUL instructor who loved teaching others. It wasn’t just a paycheck to him. He made an impact on my life as I went on to be a computer programmer for 19 years.
