James Ahten Obituary

EAST PEORIA - James A. "Pike" Ahten, 73, of East Peoria passed away at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at his home with his family and friends by his side.

He was born Sept. 30, 1934, in East Peoria to Arthur Sr. and Rosalie Combs Ahten. He married Ila M. Dobbelaire in East Peoria on Aug. 25, 1957. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Gregg (Pam) of East Peoria, Bryan (Julie) of North Pekin and Darren of East Peoria; four grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas, Sara and Christopher; one great-granddaughter, Kelela; three brothers, Arthur Jr. (Christine) of East Peoria, Don (Sylvia) and Fred (Barb), both of Creve Coeur; one sister, Peggy Ahten of East Peoria; and one sister-in-law, Hilda Ahten of Pekin.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest "Bud," Bill, Bob and infant brother, Larry.

He worked as a foreman at Bemis Co. in Peoria before retiring.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of the East Peoria Historical Society.

He loved his woodworking, antiquing and to play baseball. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. Pike will be remembered for his baking, especially his cream puffs, pizza and cinnamon rolls.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria, with the Rev. David Lynn officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following services, with burial of ashes in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the East Peoria Historical Society, Community Hospice of Peoria or to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
