PEORIA - John O. Freim Jr., 69, of Peoria died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2007, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, ending a nine-year battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 5, 1937, in Denver, Colo., to John and Clara (Karlin) Freim.
He is survived by his son, John (Diane) Freim III of Escondido, Calif.; his daughter, Vicki Kellar of Elmhurst; brother, Harold Freim of Syracuse, N.Y.; sister, Barbara Friel of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his beloved grandchildren, Jessica and John O. Freim IV, both of Escondido, Calif.
He attended Englewood High School and Adams State College, where he was a multi-sport athlete earning All-American academic honors. After two years in the United States Marine Corps, he continued his education at New Mexico Highlands University and Pennsylvania State University, obtaining a Ph.D. in biophysics.
Dr. Freim moved to Peoria in 1968 and worked for almost four decades as a faculty member in the physics department at Bradley University. He greatly enjoyed this profession, in which his unique and highly skilled teaching style was acknowledged and appreciated by his fellow faculty members and several generations of students. He also worked at Methodist Medical Center as a medical physicist in the radiation oncology department.
He enjoyed sports, attending almost all Bradley basketball home games for 40 years, his grandchildren, his cats and was blessed with an extended network of close and caring friends.
He was a member of the Laramie Street Baptist Church in Peoria, where visitation will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, immediately followed by a memorial service led by Pastor Bill Williams.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bradley University or the Laramie Street Baptist Church.
A private burial service will be held at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria on Wednesday morning.
Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dear John, Vicki and Diane,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I always admired John Freim and was sorry that the family didn't have the opportunity to get together more often. He always brightened those occasions with his dry wit. I will miss him.

Uncle Johnny, You were always the inspiration for the family. My Mom told me the good times of growing up in Englewood. I share the grief of losing such a great person and former Oakland Raider.

Dear John and Vickie;
Donna and I have always felt we could have done more to help your dad during those years when you were small and he was so very busy, but we knew that he was giving you the main thing in life and that was love and caring. We have always admired him for that. He was a really very intelligent person who found great joy in making the complicated and esoteric simple enough for everyone to understand as his students will attest. All who were in contact with him will miss him.

Vicki, John & Diane and all of the extended family. We always considered John our Brother In Law and cannot tell you how much we will miss your Dad. There are many beloved stories in our family that center on his sense of humor. Please know that you will be in my prayers both during the services and after. I cannot be there in person, but I will be there in spirit.
Love, Aunt Vicki

Vicki - your dad was my Physics professor back in the '70's - he is one of those teachers who stays with you forever. My daughter is now at Bradley and had hoped to have him as well. Now he is at peace - I'm sorry for your loss.

Dear John,
You were married to our sister, but you also married her family. Even though you and Sandi were divorced, we loved you always as a family member. You were a man of great humility, humor, kindness and character.
We are all better people to have been touched by you.
We will always carry you in our hearts and prayers.
Love you
