MORTON - John W. Schertz, 80, of Morton passed away at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at his home.
He was born Jan. 7, 1934, on the family farm in Adams County, Indiana, to Ezra and Ludella (Lehman) Schertz. He married Judy McCarthy on July 31, 1960, in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Schertz of Morton; one son, Jay (Karen) Schertz of Morton; one daughter, Jill Tobias of Morton; and five grandchildren, Ashley and Megan Schertz and Leah, Katie and Drew Tobias.
He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, David Tobias.
John was a 1952 graduate of Morton High School. He then served from 1954 to 1956 in the United States Army with the Corps of Engineers.
John did his carpenter apprenticeship at Mathis Lumber Company in Morton. He later worked for N. Zobrist and Sons, finishing his career with Diversified Buildings Inc. until his retirement in 1996.
He was a member of Grace Church in Morton, where he served as an usher for many years.
He also was a member of the Morton American Legion Post 318, Kennel Lake Sportsmen's Club in Morton and Carpenters Local 237.
John treasured the time he spent at Judy's, Miller Paint Shop and with his family and lifelong friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Grace Church in Morton, with Pastor Doug Habegger and Pastor Tim Bertsche officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Further visitation will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Hirstein Cemetery in Morton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's memory to the education fund for his grandson Drew Tobias, c/o CEFCU.
