WYOMING - Dr. Josef Unhold, 92, of Wyoming passed away at 2:29 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, surrounded by his family, at the homestead.
Josef was born on July 11, 1928, in Rudolfsgnad, Yugoslavia, to Franz and Eva (Galbach) Unhold. He married Sunna Schefzik on August 2, 1952, in Linz, Austria. She preceded him in death on August 6, 1991.
Surviving are six children, Gerald (Sharon Dreeben) Unhold of LaJolla, CA, Heidi Unhold of Aurora, CO, Eva Unhold of New York City, NY, Martha (Richard) Hultgren of Maple Grove, MN, Erika Unhold of Salt Lake City, UT, and Ernie (Stacy) Unhold of Wyoming, IL; seven grandchildren, Monica (Andrei) Villarreal, Nicholas Unhold, Paul (Emily) Hultgren, Nathan (Channing) Hultgren, Anna Hultgren, Ethan Unhold and Aidan Unhold; four great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Leonardo, Robert Josef and Hadley; one brother, Michel (Helga) Unhold; several sisters-in-law, including, Heidi (Mike) Colgan; numerous nieces and nephews around the world; and partner-in-crime, Roger (Ruth) Garrison.
Josef immigrated to the United States in 1956 after attending Karl-Franzens University in Graz, Austria. He served his internship at Saint Barnabas Hospital in Minneapolis and his residency at the former Methodist Hospital in Peoria. Throughout his career, he worked for St. Francis Hospital, Kewanee Hospital, as a general practice physician in Wyoming from 1958 until his retirement in 1996, and for Proctor First Care, even after his retirement. He loved his patients and serving his community through his practice.
He was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Wyoming Lions Club and the Peoria Medical Society. He loved traveling and began a new passion in gardening to continuing Sunna's love of flowers after her passing. Josef was an avid sports fan, following the Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Braves, LA Lakers, Wyoming Indians, the Stark County Rebels and all of the sports and events that his children and grandchildren participated in.
Josef's funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at the WyHi Community Center in Wyoming. The funeral service can also be viewed live on the Facebook page "Josef Unhold's Funeral Service." Pastor Linda Strader will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, also at the WyHi Community Center. Please wear a face covering and respect social distancing guidelines. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery.
