EAST PEORIA - Lowell Dean Williams, 77, of East Peoria, Ill., died at 12:09 a.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at Methodist Medical Center after a long battle with COPD/emphysema.
Born on March 15, 1933, in Kell, Ill., to Estel and Nida (Tate) Williams, he married Phyllis Crossman on Dec. 20, 1952, in Iuka, Ill. She survives. Both were 1951 graduates of Salem Community High School.
Also surviving are four daughters, Deana (Bob) Kail of Millbrook, Ill., Diane (Dennis) Quitschau of Peoria Heights, Ill., Linda (Dave) Gerbracht of Marquette Heights, Ill., and Lori (Jackson) Vaughn of Batesville, Ark.; one brother, Gary Williams (formerly of Washington), now of Kell, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandson.
He retired in 1993 from Caterpillar Inc. after working there for 42 years. In June of 1954, he joined Northern Tazewell Fire Protection District as a volunteer. In the late '60s he was one of the original committee members forming the first free ambulance service to the Sunnyland area. After serving many years and many positions, including fire chief, he continued his service as a trustee, serving as president until his death.
Dean was a 50-year Mason with the Taylor Lodge 98 of Washington, Ill.
He enjoyed camping, fishing with the girls, woodworking, working on cars, home projects, solitaire games, spending time with his family, and, of course, hanging out at the fire house.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Pastor Dave Bucknam will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Deer Creek.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Northern Tazewell Fire & Rescue Protection District or the American Lung Association.

Dear Williams family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. There's a lot of things we remember about Dean, but the one things we'll will never forget was his grin! Never sure if he was agreeing with you or not, but he would smile! He was a good guy, and we're sure he will be missed.
