MORTON - Maurice F. "Morrie" Farris, 84, of Morton passed away at 9:03 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, after a short illness.
He was born March 6, 1931, in Peoria to Charles and Anna (Alwan) Farris. He married Patricia Frick on Jan. 6, 1967.
Morrie was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; one brother, Anthony; two sisters, Esther and Marie; and one brother-in-law, Stephen Abraham II.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Farris of Morton; one son, Christopher (Shawna) Farris of Morton; and three grandchildren, Charlie, Delaney and Max. Also surviving is one sister, Laurice Abraham of Memphis, Tenn.
Morrie was a graduate of St. Patrick's School in Peoria. After graduation, Morrie worked many various jobs to help support his family. As an adult, Morrie managed Mac-Hy's Market and served as a corporal in the United States Army as part of the Army of Occupation in Germany. He also owned his own grocery store and worked for many years at his family's meat market, Alwan's, on Saturdays. Morrie retired in 1986 from Caterpillar Tractor Co. after almost 20 years of service. Not content to just fade into retirement, Morrie continued to work until over the age of 80, spending most of those years managing the SuperWash in Washington, Ill.
One of Morrie's greatest enjoyments was his cars. He was known by family, friends and neighbors as an avid car aficionado, keeping each one in car show condition. Morrie was also a thoughtful and generous man to all. He devoted much time and attention to the care of his wife, son and extended family. Morrie especially doted on his best little buddy, his six-year-old grandson, Charlie, spending several hours each week with him, creating many special memories.
Morrie was a longtime member of the Itoo Society in Peoria.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. A Catholic graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12 in Roberts Cemetery in Morton, where military rites will be conducted.
