Peter M. Wessler
PEORIA - Lifelong Peoria resident, Peter Mehrings Wessler, 63, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, after a short illness. due to COVID-19 complications.
Peter was born on August 15, 1957, in Peoria and, after graduating from Bradley University with a degree in Music Education, he took a job teaching music in Peoria Public School District 150, primarily at Woodruff High School, until his retirement in 2013. After he left the teaching position, he enjoyed being a driver for Peoria Charter Coach.
Peter was a talented musician and spent his life sharing that gift with others. In addition to teaching music in the public schools, Peter taught String Techniques to Music Education majors at Bradley University as an adjunct professor and was also the choir director at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. He played violin in the Peoria Symphony and enjoyed musical collaborations with his wife and children, all of whom are also professional musicians.
Peter served as the Lutheran Summer Music Academy Director since 2003 and was both the face and the backbone of the LSM summer community for almost two decades. To quote the LSM Executive Director Thomas Bandar, "His leadership always included kindness, patience, dedication to the students, and a reverence to the program he served. Peter was not only a faithful servant to LSM, but a friend to all, and an irreplaceable fixture in our community and our lives." Throughout his life, Peter was a humble servant, jumping in to help wherever and whenever needed. He touched so many lives.
Peter's greatest joy was his family and they feel his loss so very deeply. He leaves behind parents, Max and Ardith Wessler; uncle, Rob Wessler; his wife of 38 years, Carol; his children, Jonathan (Joy) and Daniel (Molly); grandchildren, Julia, Matthew and Benjamin; his brother, Kirk (MaryFran); sister, Tammy (Tom); and nieces and nephews.
We take comfort in knowing that Peter rests in the arms of Christ and will rise with Him in Glory.
A private service will be held at Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Barry Long officiating.
Please direct memorial gifts to Lutheran Summer Music, which has started a scholarship fund in Peter's memory:; and in Peter's memory, be kind and helpful and loving to everyone you meet.

I was incredibly saddened to hear of his passing. As the LC Music Department Admin. Assist. I worked with Peter for many years while LSM was in summer residence at Luther College. Peter was efficient, organized and had all the qualities you would want in an employee, BUT - he was so much more! You could not find a more friendly, kind, and genuinely NICE person. Sending the Wessler and LSM families my sympathy. I know he will be greatly missed by all.

Pete was a great person, a dear friend, a dedicated teacher, a talented musician, a proud husband and father and a generous helper. To say we are shocked at his sudden passing is to state the obvious, and words are inadequate to express our gratitude for having known him.

Mr Wessler taught me how to play the violin when I was at Kingman Grade School and ended up being my orchestra teacher again, replacing Mr Hawkins at Woodruff High School, class of 1985.
My sympathies to his family. He was an amazing teacher.
