Richard Wessels Obituary

PEORIA - Richard "Dick" Wessels, age 71, of Peoria, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014.

Though his body stopped working Jan. 29 at UnityPoint Health-Methodist, we feel he left us from home on Jan. 26, after suffering a heart attack.

He was born Sept. 15, 1942, and was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Frieda M. (Onken) Wessels.

He attended Peoria Central High School (1960) and Bradley University.

He had a 30-year career with Procter and Gamble Distributing Company, retiring in 1997.

Dick is survived by the love of his life, Laraine Marie (Wilson) Wessels. They were married on Aug. 28, 1964, in Peoria.

He is also survived by daughter, Sheryl (Daniel) Krengel of Guangzhou, China; son, Steve (Amy) Wessels of Peoria, Ill.; grandsons, Brandon Turek-Krengel and Tyler Wessels; granddaughters, Anna Krengel and Ashley Wessels; brothers, Jerry (Caroline) of Lincoln, Ill., and Bill (Kaye) of Park Rapids, Minn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dick loved to play golf. He loved his gardens and walking his land. He loved traveling to the northern woods of Minnesota. He loved spending time with people. He loved to talk and visit. He loved his family.

Dick will be missed at the many sporting events he enjoyed attending for his grandchildren and at the Kickapoo hangouts where he and his friends solved all the problems of the world.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to PFS Shelters (formerly Pets for Seniors), P.O. Box 64, Edwards, IL 61528-0064. He and Laraine have volunteered taking care of the cats and dogs for many years.

Laraine:

Prayers for the entire family. Dick was one of the BEST Sales Team members I ever had the pleasure of working with. The trade loved him. I will always remember how he kept a mini can of hair spray for me when I worked with him after a "Bad Hair Day" in the 80's--he truly ws the best. Respectfully,

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He was a good man who welcomed me into the P&G family in 1977. My son Chris always enjoyed talking with him at the Jones shows in Springfield. He showed many of us youngsters how to be a true P&G er. I also had the pleasure of working with Sheryl during her Peoria years. Your album showed him to be a good husband, father, grandpa and friend who enjoyed life. He always had a smile on his face and he will be fondly remembered. My sympathy to all the Wessels family.

Laraine, Sheryl, and Steve---
My deepest sympathies to the three of you on the passing of your husband and dad. One of the highlights of my days with P&G was heading to Peoria to work with and learn from Dick. He was the ultimate professional and represented everything we as a company wanted. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and a total class act. We would not be in the car five minutes and he would want to give me the low down on what you--Sheryl and Steve were doing-he was so proud of the kids and then adults both of you became. I treasured my times with him both on a personal and professional level. Laraine I remember our times at the "cook your own steak place" and even if you weren't with us --he always wanted to take home an "apple brown betty" for you. He had a great impact on my life and I am a much better man from our experiences together. I will never forget his smile and positive attitude and characterized every aspect of his life. Thanks for sharing him with me
