Robert Molitor Obituary

Modern-day golf ball inventor

PEORIA - Robert P. "Bob" Molitor, 89, of Peoria passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, with his family at his side.

Bob was born on March 17, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Peter F. and Anna Brand Molitor, both of Brooklyn. He graduated from Manual Training High School in Brooklyn in 1939, and he received his BS degree in chemical engineering from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., in 1942. He later did post-graduate work at Notre Dame University and received an honorary doctorate degree from Tri-State University in 2003.

In 1942, following college, Bob joined U.S. Rubber Co. (Ball-Band Plant) in Mishawaka, Ind. As a chemical engineer at Ball-Band, he helped develop fuel tanks for fighter planes that automatically sealed when damaged by bullets or shrapnel. This innovation was used during the famous Doolittle raids on Tokyo and is credited with saving the lives of numerous U.S. airmen during the second World War and subsequent wars.

It was at Ball-Band that Bob met Burnice Crofoot from Mishawaka, whom he married on April 18, 1944, at Sacred Heart Church in Lakeville, Ind.

Bob later worked for Sun Rubber Co. in Barbarton, Ohio, and Bauer and Black in Chicago, before settling in at A.G. Spalding Co. in Chicopee, Mass. Bob worked for Spalding, the well-known sporting-goods company, for the next 43 years. He was soon appointed the vice president for research and development, and retired in 1999 at the age of 78.

The family lived in South Hadley, Mass., for 24 years before Bob and Burnice moved to Edwardsburg, Mich., in 1981. In 2001, the couple moved to Sycamore, Ill., and then on to Peoria, Ill., in 2005, to live closer to family.

Bob had a career filled with accomplishments. He was awarded 27 patents for his innovative work, mostly in the field of sporting goods. In addition to those mentioned above, he also pioneered colored tennis balls, made numerous improvements to air-filled balls, including footballs and basketballs, developed plastic ski boots, and made baseballs easier to manufacture.

But his most famous accomplishments were in the world of golf, where he is considered to be the "father of the modern-day golf ball." He developed the first two-piece golf ball, the Top Flite, in 1971. This process eventually would be used by every major golf ball manufacturer in the world. The Surlyn cover that he created made golf balls nearly cut-proof for the first time and revolutionized the game of golf for the average player.

Bob received numerous awards and recognitions during his career, including articles in major golf magazines and election to the National Sporting Goods Hall of Fame in 1979. A line of high-end golf equipment manufactured by Spalding carried the Molitor brand for many years.

Despite his professional accomplishments, Bob's family and friends will remember him most for his determination and unwillingness to give in to the effects of multiple sclerosis, his modest personality, his love and generosity for family and friends, and his innovative spirit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Burnice; his four children, Bruce (Christine) Molitor of Bedford, Texas, Susan Molitor (Paul) Edmiston of Frankfort, Ind., Peter (Jocelyn) Molitor of Hatfield, Mass., and Teresa Molitor (Dan) Smyth of Peoria, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6001 N. University St., Peoria, IL 61614, where a funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2010, with Monsignor Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded after the Mass. Burial of ashes will be at a later date. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Memories and Condolences
for Robert Molitor

Not sure what to say?

Wendell Couch

August 5, 2010

We are saddened to hear of the loss of Robert "Bob" Molitor. Mr. Molitor forever changed the game of golf inventing many game improvement products including the Top Flite golf ball. In addition, Mr. Molitor saved a struggling sporting goods company and allowed Spalding to prosper and grow. Everyone who worked at Spalding during the "good ole" days understand and appreciated Bob Molitor for saving a great company. We cherished the sales meeting opportunities to hear Bob talk about new technologies and the honor to know this kind, gentle giant of a man. Wendell Couch 1965-2004

Mrs. Molitor,
I also had the profound honor of working for Spalding's Professional Golf Sales Division along with Randy Wolcott and many other great people. I know after 66 years of a life together with one person and now having that person pass on is hard to understand. Bob may have left you but he will forever be remembered by all the people he touched with his humble way. My heart goes out to you and your family. I want you to know that this man touched the hearts of many people over the 43 years he was with Spalding. In our hearts and found memories of Bob he will be with us all forever....

God blss you and keep you safe.

With my deepest sincerest regrets,

I was a golf sale representative for Spalding from 1974-1999. Although I was very much aware of Bob's many accomplishments and his position as V.P., I was able to speak with him in an informal and friendly manner. I admired both Bob's brilliance and his ability to connect with many people. My condolences to his family. John Boyle, Lunenburg, Ma.

I had the profound honor of working for Spalding Golf Division for 24 years, and never met a more revered, and respected man than was Bob Molitor. He put the Spalding golf ball in it's highest acclaim and was always humbled by the accolades he received and deserved. God Bless you Bob Molitor and you will always remain in all of our hearts by all that graced your years on this earth.

Mrs Molitor,
I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Molitor's passing. I heard about it from lone time friend Wendell Couch from our Spalding days. I was a salesman for Spalding from 1968 till 1990 and each and every time I had a chance to speak with Mr Molitor I cherished each and every word he said to me. He was always so humble in his way to explain answers to questions I asked him. He would put his words together so well so gracefully so I could understand him. I was a very young man at age 24 when I started with Spalding and was hired by Chester L. "Cedy" Jones out of the Atlanta Regional office. Mr Jones told me to
always speak and talk with Mr Molitor and he would be glad to help me with the understanding about how golf balls "work".

Your wonderful husband was a 'GENTLE GIANT" in our world.

God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,
Richard C. Pittman

My deepest sympathies. I met Bob once via a co-worker of his (Dick Ayotte). I was just a kid and had developed a passion for golf. Meeting "Mr. Molitor" was a thrill as the Molitor ball was new and the Rolls Royce of golf balls. Our brief meeting was a thrill...we talked about golf, he discussed ball design, etc... and shortly thereafter, Dick brought me a gift....a dozen Molitors from Bob. They remained in the box for a long time...too special to use. The memory is vivid...taking a sleeve out to practice putting on our livingroom carpet...repeated often for hours...a special time for a kid and a special memory to share with you. My deepest sympathies.

I worked with Bob in the '60's and '70's at Spalding / Questor and I am saddened to read of his passing. During my years there Bob was the driving R&D force in the Company and certainly among the most brilliant guys I've ever known. My sympathies to the family.

Burnice & Family,
We are very sad to read of Bob's passing. It was just over a year ago that we met both of you at Life Styles Salon. Getting to know both of you showed us that you are wonderful people. Then we would see you at the Long Horn Restaurant. What a nice surprise to find out many of Bob's accomplishments. He was such a humble person. We hope the many happy memories will help you get through this most difficult time. Our memories will help us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

The Molitor Family,
I attended college with Teresa (Tess to us) and have fond memories of father/daughter weekends. Bob Molitor was always one of the 'fun' Dads, always ready with a good story and hardy laugh. At the time I was playing lots of women's softball. Mr. Molitor sent me a Spaulding glove that I treasured (and caught a lot of line drives with!) My older brother coveted that glove and I finally lent it to him. I haven't seen it since, but I know it's still getting a regular workout! Thank you Mr. Molitor.
I'm sure he will be greatly missed. You are all in my thoughts.
