Robert "Bob" E. Newlin
DEER CREEK - Robert "Bob" E. Newlin, 89, formerly of Deer Creek, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.
He was an Oak Park resident from 1952 to 1967 and resident of Geneva for 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara Barr. He was the devoted father of Gregory (Martha), Linda Tjaden (Richard), Douglas (Karen) and Cynthia Sandberg (James); and grandfather to Jason, Sean, Maggie, Katie, Rachel and Will.
He was born on March 28, 1928, and grew up in Deer Creek, IL. He received a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois in 1950, where he was involved with Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Triangle Engineering Fraternity, Interfraternity Council and Pi Tau Pi Sigma Service for Army Communications, and received his MBA from Northwestern University in 1962. He served in the Korean War from 1951-1952 as an officer in the Army Signal Service Corps, a Company of 550 men in Tokyo, Japan, and as a radio relay team commander in the Eighth Army in Korea. He was Product Manager for Motorola Police 2-way Radios & Radio-Control Traffic Lights. He helped conceive the first low power output 2-way radio. He volunteered as a Junior Achievement Advisor. He was recognized for technology roles at other companies including AT&T, his own start-up, and as a technical speaker. He was a Jazz enthusiast, co-founder of Homes for Endangered & Lost Pets (H.E.L.P.), a Junior League Football coach, and project leader for Geneva's new football field lights in 1975.
Visitation will be on Nov. 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Malone Funeral Home in Geneva.
