MAPLETON - Roy T. Modglin Jr., 61, of Mapleton, formerly of Peoria, passed away at 11:33 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. He was born Feb. 13, 1947, in Peoria, the son of Roy T. and JoeAnna Eads Modglin. Roy married Nina Van Lingen on Dec. 14, 1985, in Peoria. She survives.
They have three children, Lindsay M. (Jason) Shepler of Peoria, Jeffery S. (Donna) Modglin and Roy T. (Kim) Modglin III, both of Mapleton. He is Papa to Jacob Shepler, Benjamin Shepler, Jeff Modglin, Grace Modglin, Gavin Modglin, Brock Modglin, Matthew Modglin and Natalie Modglin. He was the most loving son of his mother, JoeAnna of Peoria. He is also survived by his best friend, Wesley "Duke" (Dorothy) Pitcher of Brimfield. He always said he could never have had a better friend than Duke.
Roy graduated from Manual High School in 1965, was a member of the Hall of Fame football team of 1962, and graduated from ICC with a degree in Fire Science and then the National Fire Academy in 1999.
He served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Roy joined the Peoria Fire Department in 1970 as a hose man and worked his way up to the position of Chief of the Department in 2001 and retired as Chief in 2007, after 36 years of dedicated service to the community he loved.
He was a loving, supportive, thoughtful and truly kind husband and father. He always called Nina his one and only love and they shared a blessed life together. He loved his family with all his heart. He also loved the Peoria Fire Department.
Roy was a born firefighter who had what it took to answer the call. He had the best of the characteristics a true firefighter needs: a big heart, a warm personality and a willingness to risk his life to save another. His close friend, Butch Gudat, shared those qualities and gave his life in the line of duty.
Our hearts are broken and we are devastated by his death and will never be the same. God bless the soul of Roy Modglin.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2008, at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials be made to the Peoria Alzheimer's Association, the Butch Gudat Memorial Fund c/o Community Foundation, 331 Fulton St., Peoria IL 61602 or to PAWS.

To all of the Modglin families,
It's been one month and one day since we lost Roy and our hearts are still aching for him. Nina- You are right that there was not enough time. Roy and I were just beginning to reconnect and Dad was really looking forward to seeing his nephew(who he always was proud of) and now worries about his sister- Joe(Roys' mother).
You all are in our thoughts and prays every day. love to you all,
Verna, Carl and our entire families.

Roy was a man of many friends, and loved by all of them. Roy and Jeff, remember the FF club in Groveland, we spent a lot of time there with our dads. I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend, I will be there in spirit. My parents will be there, Jim and Judie King. I will always remember your dads laughter and how he took care of people, I will miss him. Everyone stay strong, that's what Roy would expect.
