PEORIA - Velma Gladys (Bryson) Edwards, 97, of St. Francis of the Woods, 3507 N. Molleck Drive, peacefully passed away at Methodist Medical Center at 4:34 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.
Gladys, as she was affectionately called, was born on June 10, 1915, in New Albany, Miss., to the late Hubert and Edna (Sanders) Bryson. She married Kermit Edwards in 1986, and he preceded her in death.
Gladys attended Rust College and worked at Block & Kuhl (Carson Pirie Scott) while attending Bradley University. She taught at St. Patrick Catholic School for 15 years.
She was also preceded in death by brothers Carl, Russell, Hayes, Hubert, Harold, Elton Sr., Emmitt, Frank Sr. and James Bryson.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Evelyn Bryson Walker of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters-in-law Shirley Bryson and Ossie Bryson of Peoria; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Mount Zion M.B. Church, with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Alphonso Lyons Jr. will officiate. Gladys will be laid to rest in Springdale Cemetery. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
