1931-2021
Carol Adele Pooley, 90, of East Stroudsburg, widow of John C. Pooley, passed away Sunday, 11 July 2021 at home, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born 28 March 1931 in Muskegon, Michigan to Edward William and Juanita Currey Moore and grew up in Muskegon and East Lansing. She studied physical education at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, where she played basketball and swam on club teams, and later at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
After her first marriage ended, Carol moved with her five children to Madison Wisconsin, where she gave them a happy childhood. She taught them to love books, swimming, hiking, camping, canoeing, archery, ice skating and skiing. As a homemaker, she was a skilled seamstress and made clothing for herself and her children. She liked to crochet and knit, and made dozens of baby blankets for family, friends and charity. She made home-made bread from home-ground wheat for fifty years, and was famous for her pies and brownies.
Carol married the love of her life, John C. Pooley, 15 August 1970 in Madison, Wisconsin, and he adopted her children. They moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they maintained a home for twenty years. They moved to East Stroudsburg about 33 years ago. John and Carol traveled together all over the world and especially enjoyed their year on sabbatical in Australia. While traveling, Carol gathered a lot of family history information. She kept a beautiful home and was known for her hospitality to visiting family and friends from around the world. She cared for her husband as his health declined in recent years. He died about two months ago.
Her career was varied, including modeling for a department store as a teenager, working on a farm, at a newspaper, an employment agency, in the Department of Anthropology at the University Wisconsin and for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. In Halifax, Carol was program coordinator for the Dalhousie University Student Union and coordinator of post-graduate medical training for Dalhousie University Medical School. She taught anatomy and physical education classes at the university level, presented papers at international physical education conferences and edited conference proceedings. She assisted her husband in leading several international travel study groups, including to the Soviet Union.
An avid outdoorswoman, Carol enjoyed snorkeling, SCUBA diving and hunting with both bow and rifle. She taught, coached, officiated and administered swimming up to the national level in Canada, and was a certified soccer coach and coaching official. She taught skiing at Camelback Resort and West Point. She and John skied as volunteers at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A past president of Friends of the Eastern Monroe Public Library and a member of the EMPL board of trustees, Carol was instrumental in acquiring the current building on North Ninth Street. She sorted books and helped organize the library book sales. She was a long-time volunteer poll worker for election day and was active in the county Republican Party.
Carol participated in The Older Adult Learning Community. A gifted writer, she especially enjoyed taking writing classes. She was an artist who studied under Alex Castro and exhibited paintings at local art shows. Her portrait of her husband, John, won second prize in oil at the Pocono Art Society spring art show in 2011.
A faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, Carol was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught and ministered in the church for more than sixty years. With her husband, she sang in the choir. Carol loved to go to the temple and she and John were among the volunteer hosts at the open house before the dedication of the Philadelphia Temple in 2016.
Carol was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her daughter Virginia Dinnell (Michael). She leaves her sons, Donald Pooley (Loralee) and William Knott, daughters Phyllis Kimpel (Lawrence) and Candace Washburn (Rob), brother Bill Moore (Teri), sister-in-law, Margaret Phillips (Anthony), son-in-law, Michael Dinnell, twenty-five grandchildren and forty-three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
