Ethel Werner Obituary

Ethel H. Werner, 96, formerly of Sciota, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, in Chandler Estates, Plainfield Township.

Born Nov. 10, 1913, in North Poultney, Vt., she was a daughter of the late William R. and Mary Peters Thomas.

Her husband, Kermit Werner, died Jan. 2, 1995. Ethel was a longtime resident of Hamilton Township, Monroe County.

She graduated from Pen Argyl High School in 1931 and East Stroudsburg Normal School in 1933. After receiving her teacher's certificate, Ethel taught elementary school in Northampton County and the Pen Argyl School District. She retired in 1969, after 27 years of service.

Ethel was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired Persons. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

She is survived by one sister, Nancy Napoli of Concord, N.C.; two nephews, Sherwood Gum and his wife, June, of Wind Gap and Thomas Napoli of Charlotte, N.C.; four nieces, Brenda Tomlinson and her husband, Lowell, of Bethlehem, Susan Shupp of Smithsburg, Md., Rochelle Clark and her husband, Steven, of Orlando, Fla., and Cheryl Lynn Haywood and her husband, Doug, of Evans City; a brother in-law, Richard Werner of Nazareth; and a sister in-law, Esther Haywood of Levittown.

She was predeceased by one brother, James Thomas, and one sister, Doris Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in Schmidt Funeral Home, 202 West St., Wind Gap. There will be no calling hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in Wind Gap Cemetery, Plainfield Township.

In lieu of flowers, contributions, in memory of Ethel, may be offered to Heartland Hospice, 881 Marcon Blvd., Allentown, PA 18106.
