George Gifford Obituary

George W. Gifford, 53, of Greentown, died on Friday evening, July 25, in Mercy Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Florence (Pierrepont) Gifford, of Greentown, and the late James H. Gifford Sr. He had resided in Greentown for most of his life.

He was a 1973 graduate of Wallenpaupack Area High School and studied welding at Monroe County Vocational Technical School.

He was an interstate truck driver, working for H.B. Hunt, Tully Construction and, most recently, Jos. Oletto, Wilkes-Barre. He also drove for Pike County and Monroe County Transportation.

He served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class and equipment operator with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 21, Avoca. He served in Operation Desert Storm in 1990 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

He was also a caregiver for his mother.

In addition to his mother, Florence, he is survived by six sisters, Sharon Gifford of Massapequa, N.Y., Kathleen Rhodes of Sarasota, Fla., Carolyn Gjoka, Eileen Vasquez and Mary Gifford-Swingle, all of Greentown, and Jamie Lukeski of Hamlin; five brothers, James Jr. and Kenneth, both of Greentown, Norman of Tobyhanna, Daniel of Lake Ariel and Robert of Scotrun; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the Greene-Dreher Fire Hall, Crestmont Drive, Newfoundland, with the Rev. Robert Hanor officiating. Military honors will be given by his Naval Reserve Unit.

Memorial remembrances may be made to the Greene-Dreher Scholarship Fund for a scholarship in his memory, the Promiseland or Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Companies or to the Newfoundland or Promiseland Ambulance Corps.

Georgie,

You had the heart of an angel; caring for Mom, going to war for our freedom (numerous times) for which we are grateful. Travelling with the National Guard to help the oppressed, yet still loving to be a kid: Batman, Spiderman, and the Three stooges to name a few. Your obsession with recording every moment of life in pictures and video is amazing. I suppose what you saw in your tours at war brought a raw sense of awareness of time that we couldn't imagine and perhaps that led to your wanting to account for time. Well, Georgie, your time here was well spent and we are extremely grateful for all you have done for us and given us. You have impressed upon me just how valuable TIME is. Life is too precious to waste even a minute. You have no idea what will happen from one minute to the next minute. It should not take the loss of a love one to let you know how precious life is to you. Let the people in your life know NOW how you feel.

You stayed single and dedicated your life to God, Country, Your Unit, and taking care of Mom. You were too young in my opinion, but perhaps God needed another angel and they say only the good die young. We love you Georgie and will always miss you, Bunky.

God Speed. Semper Fidelis. Ooh-Rah.
