Joseph Johnson Obituary

Joseph A. Johnson, 59, of Brunswick, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

He was born on Feb. 17, 1948, in Bethlehem, the son of Urbanus Michael and Margaret (Humbert) Johnson, and was the husband of Terea (Wynn) Johnson.

Joe attended Blair Academy from 1963 to 1965 and graduated from Bangor High School in 1966. He graduated from North Louisiana University in 1970 with a degree in biology. He did graduate work in biology at East Stroudsburg University.

He retired from the National Park Service after 33 years of service as a ranger, criminal investigator, firearms instructor, SWAT leader, member of the NPS firefighters, and firearms manager.

His career encompassed time at Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, Fire Island National Seashore, Colonial National Historical Park, Lake Mead National Recreational Area, Ozark National Scenic Riverway and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at Brunswick, Ga. During his long career, Joe was nationally recognized by the Park Service and other federal agencies for his outstanding work in training rangers, conservationists and other local, state and federal law enforcement divisions.

He was a wonderful storyteller who held his audience speIlbound as he related tales of his personal adventures. As an environmentalist, he cared for all of nature and believed in the ideals of the National Park Service. His love of the outdoors included hunting, fishing and bird watching. He found peace and enjoyment in his time spent interacting with wildlife and the natural habitat.

In addition to his wife, Terry, he is survived by a son, Judson Ashley Johnson; a sister, Candace Williams and her husband, Todd; and a brother, U. Michael Johnson, and his wife, Mary Jo. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as his beloved dog, Meg.

He is loved, will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all he touched with his kind, warm and loving spirit.

Private services will be conducted at a later time in his native Pennsylvania. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Sea Turtle Center, or a charity of one's choice.

A very sad occasion for the Class of 1966. Although so much time has passed, one can easily remember Jody's always-ready smile and humorous twinkle in his eyes. Reading your words of tribute to him validated that the young man we knew continued to mature into a warm, fun-loving, open-hearted individual who was much beloved by his family. What a wonderful, fulfilling life he had--thank you for sharing knowledge of this with us! He certainly left quite a legacy for his family. May you have comfort in knowing that he will always be remembered fondly by the many individuals whose lives he touched.

Our heart goes out to family and friends throughout his many travels. Having seen him in many years doesn't erase the sorrow of a friend and classmate. Rest assure his spirit will be with all of us.

Jody, as we knew him at Bangor Class of 1966. Very well liked student. Lost all contact after Graduation. We all went seperate ways and as we grow older we feel a need to get close again. I'm sure when I say I feel your sorrow all of our classmates would feel the same. Thinking of all of you during this sorrowful time, and hoping you find comfort in the many precious memories that you share as a family. Even though I do not know any other family members I feel a connection because I knew Joseph.
