Born on Feb. 11, 1956, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of Douglas E. and Virginia L. Scheirer of East Stroudsburg.
While a student at East Stroudsburg High School and Monroe County Vo-Tech School, he was a member of the wrestling team, chess and rifle clubs, and a junior fireman with Acme Hose Company. He graduated in 1975.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He graduated from boot camp at Cape May, N.J., and then successfully completed several engine schools at Yorktowne, Md. His first assignment was in Boston, Mass., as an engineman on a 40-foot search and rescue boat. He received many letters of commendation for his involvement in rescues. He was also stationed on the Icebreaker Northwind, on which he made a polar expedition. Other duties involved port safety in Wilmington, N.C. and St. Inigoes in Maryland, a river buoy tender out of New London, Conn., and duty aboard USCG Cutter 35, the Ingham, spending two tours of sea duty.
He was a member of the decommissioning crew of the Ingham. His last tour of duty was in station support at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. He retired in 1995 after 20 years of service as a petty officer first class.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Linda Labar Clark of East Stroudsburg; two brothers, Kevin L. Scheirer of East Stroudsburg, and Eric C. Scheirer of Greentown; one daughter, Angela Livings of Pensacola, Fla.; three sons, Michael, Ralph and Jonathin, all of Hinesville, Ga.; one stepson, Bobby Davis of Canton, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Newfoundland Moravian Church, routes 191 and 507, downtown Newfoundland.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Michael A. Scheirer Memorial Fund in care of Newfoundland Moravian Church to benefit his three young sons.
