Russell Scott Obituary

&obitdate;January 23, 2009

Russell D. Scott Jr., of Marshalls Creek, died Friday evening, Jan. 23, in his home.

Born on May 4, 1921, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late Russell D. Scott and Francis (Huffman) Scott.

He was the loving husband of Esther (Carpenter) Scott, with whom he had shared 64 years of marriage.

He is survived by three sons, Russell D. Scott III and his wife, Autumn, Craig N. Scott and his wife, Jo Anne, and Grant S. Scott and his wife, Janet, all of Marshalls Creek. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren, Holly F. Scott, Russell D. Scott IV and his wife, Christine, Kristen S. Hamilton and her husband, John, Corey A. Scott, Lindsey B. Scott and Lucas R. Scott; and great-grandchildren, Russell D. Scott V and Nicholas P. T. Scott. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Scott of Marshalls Creek.

A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was a graduate of East Stroudsburg High School and East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, where he earned a Bachelor of Biology and General Science degree in 1942.

A veteran of World War II, he served at Camp Pickett in Blackstone, Va., helping rehabilitate injured soldiers. It was at Camp Pickett where he first witnessed the physical and rehabilitative benefits of golf, a sport he then brought to his family's boarding house, Mountain Manor Inn in Marshalls Creek.

After the war, he dedicated his life to the family business, building Mountain Manor's first 9-hole golf course in 1947. Taking over the business in 1951, he saw his many years of hard work evolve into 54 holes of golf (the most in the Northeast), 100 guest rooms, and 54 single-family homes on 425 acres of land.

Through the years, he dedicated his time to the community, becoming a founding member and former president of the Smithfield Elementary School PTA, former member of East Stroudsburg School Board, former member of Marshalls Creek Fire Company, serving on the Board of Directors at Northeastern Bank and PNC Bank, and as a residential representative on the Marshalls Creek Bypass Committee.

He was a member of numerous civic organizations, including the American Legion, Barger Lodge 325 F&AM, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 319, Porters Lake Hunting and Fishing Club, Mountain Manor Inn & Golf Club, Order of the Amaranth Inc., Pocono High 12 Club, St. John Seniors, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory of Scranton Valley, Monroe County Historical Association, and East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

The family requests memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, be sent to East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 83 S. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301, or VNA Hospice of Monroe County, 502 Independence Road, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
