Sidney Morrill Newcomb, 86, died on Thursday, May 25, in Kennett Square, Pa.
Born in Greenwich, Conn. on Oct. 10, 1919, he was the son of the late Mr. Ralph Washburn Newcomb and his wife, Mary Morrill Newcomb, of Madison, N.J.
He graduated from Madison High School in 1937 and from Drew University in 1941.
He joined the Army Air Corps in World War II where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel as a fighter pilot and squadron commander of 530th Fighter Squadron, 311th Fighter Group, 10th Air Force, also known as the "Yellow Scorpions" while serving in Burma and India. Following the war, he returned to civilian life with a long career in manufacturing and sales.
He made his home in Shawnee-on-Delaware with his wife and family until his retirement in 1990, when he moved to Charlottesville, Va.
He and his beloved wife, Laurel, had returned to Monroe County last year and made their new home at Pocono Lutheran Village.
He is survived by his wife and favorite golfing partner, Laurel; and his daughters and their children, Nancy Liguori of West Chester and her son, Michael, Sally Purtell, of North Wales and her sons, Daniel and Andrew, Holly Newcomb of Marshalls Creek and Tasitha Gilbert of Stroudsburg and her son, Brian and her daughter, Natalie.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2, at the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg. Interment will be held privately at the Shawnee Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Monroe County Meals-on-Wheels, 9 North Ninth St., Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
