LUCASVILLE— John Thomas Grooms, 76, of Lucasville, died Saturday, July 1, 2023.
He was born March 19, 1947 in Lucasville, a son of the late Homer Chilton and Hazel Mae Dawson Grooms.
John was a retired teacher, coach, and mentor, having taught at Clay, Valley and Portsmouth. He was a US Army veteran, received his Bachelor of Science in Education from the Ohio State University, and was a 1965 Valley High School graduate where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He was an avid Ohio State football and Cincinnati Reds fan.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jamianne Spriggs Grooms, November 1, 2013; sisters, Mary Ellen Grooms and Martha Jane Groom Kirk; a brother Joseph E. Grooms; and son J.T. Grooms who passed away after him the same day.
John is survived by his brother, Homer David (Lavonda) Grooms of Tulsa, OH; his sister, Elsie (Mike) Smith of London, OH; 10 nieces and nephews; and 24 great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2023 in Mound Cemetery in Piketon where military graveside rites will be performed by the William Baker and James F. Irwin Posts of the American Legion. Arrangements are under the direction of the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville.

John was my neighbor growing up, and I adopted him and Joe as brothers. He taught me all about football. I coached with him a few yrs. He will be missed.

Our family had such wonderful memories of John! My husband experience some of his teaching.
His love for Valley sports touched the kids so much! They knew he was there cheering alongside them and with TJ ! Heaven has gained an amazing soul !
