Alice Hytche Obituary

ALICE MARIE HYTCHE Muskogee, OK / Merrillville, IN Alice Marie Hytche entered into mortal life on September 22, 1942, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the second of five children born to Dolvin and Ida M. Mack. She transitioned into eternal life on Wednesday, February 20, 2008. She was educated in the Muskogee public schools and graduated from Manual Training High School. She earned the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Langston University and the Master's degree from Northeastern State University. After teaching in Oklahoma for two years, she relocated to Gary, Indiana, in 1966 where she taught in the Gary Community School Corporation for 37 years before retiring in 2002. Her employment in Gary as a music educator and reading specialist included positions at Brunswick and Beveridge elementary schools and 30 years at Edison Middle School. Upon arriving in Gary, Alice renewed her acquaintance with school-mate Willie Roy Hytche, Jr., and they married in 1967. Their marriage of 40 years produced 2 daughters, Sonya and Sharon. Alice began studying music at the age of 5 and was an accomplished pianist, performing and accompanying vocal soloists, ensembles, church choirs and various events since the age of 10. At Langston Univ., she was accompanist for the University Concert Choir. She has numerous professional music affiliations and provided a positive influence on the lives of the many young students whom she touched over the years, both at school and within her church affiliation. She was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Timothy Community Church for 41 years where she served as church pianist, accompanist and Assistant Director of the Senior Choir, Director of the Youth Choir and worked with the Men's Choir and "Joy" Ensemble. She served on the Scholarship Committee, was active with her September Birthday Group and freely offered her musical talents for many church activities and events. She also served as accompanist for the Gary Civic Chorale. Alice was an avid reader of mystery and suspense romance novels and, within the community, played in bridge tournaments and bowled with the Gary Teacher's League for several years, until her love for and skill with computer technology, powerpoint presentations, computer games and photography consumed her. She was never without a camera in her possession and anyone she ever met, she was sure to snap a picture of. Her CD collection of pictures ranges into the thousands. She regulary communicated with numerous family and friends via e-mail and loved to send personally created e-cards electronically. She was a 46-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., initiated into Alpha Zeta chapter in 1961. The joy of Alice's life was her family, especially her grandsons whom she loved, spoiled and photographed unconditionally. Her three CD recordings, "Music From the Heart," "Inspirational Music" and "Christmas CD," which she has shared with many, many friends will live on in the hearts of all who listen and fondly remember. Preceding her in death were her parents, nephew Mark Wilson, and niece Stephanie Mack. Cherished memories of the heart will remain with her husband, Willie Roy Hytche, Jr.; daughters, Sonya Michelle Hytche and Sharon Melita (Dave) Cunning-ham; grandsons Adrian, Dorian, Alec and Jory; sisters, Dolena M. Mrs. Hytche was such an amazing woman. I had the privilege of having her for choir for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at Edison. Even though I was not the greatest singer, she always encouraged me to do my best. We always had many laughs together, and she always made me do my best-no matter what. I will always have wonderful memories of her. Her loving spirit and consistent love and support helped me to become a better woman and fellow educator. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

To Roy and girls and my Dear Dolena, I just got the news tonight. My heart is heavy not knowing what to say. I have very fond memories of Alice from my days at St Timothys Church. I loved her playing, especially for me, she was always so kind and encouraging to me with my singing. I owe her much for giving me self confidence. I know you will miss her greatly. It will be a noticable void at St Timothys, but God is good to those who follow Him, He will be with you through your pain and suffering. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to contact me.
You have my deepest sympathy.

To the Hytche Family,

I dont think I have ever had the pleasure of meeting any of you but believe me, I knew you. Your mom spoke of you all often to our class at Edison Middle School. She was a wonderful woman. I will never, ever forget her. She taught me to appreciate the art in music. I remember her telling me, "I will always remember you, Sonya because that's my daughters' name too." And she did. Once when I was substitute teaching at Edison myself, I went back into her classroom to say hi and she said to me, "Sonya Hazelett, I told you I would never forget you". We have lost a beautiful lady but know that in her lifetime, she has touched a many heart..mine included. Much love and support to you at this time and know that God has you all wrapped up in his loving arms.

Lovingly and Humbly Submitted,

Sonya L Hazelett

What a great loss. I was privileged to be a student of Mrs. Hyche's at Edison Middle School in her music class, and singing in her choir, performing and strengthening your desire to accomplish whatever you wanted. There were many of us whom she encouraged to sing their "song", and develop a real appreciation of music of all types. She had a teaching style that subtlely but effectively entered your soul. It was a great loss for youth when she retired and a greater one in her death. She was someone you "knew" would live forever...or hoped would, because you knew she had the best of intentions. My sympathies go out to the Hyche family and I pray that you stay strong.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the belovèd's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To Dolena Mack;
Alice touched the hearts of many young people, just as you did. Though music you and your sister taught us that life is not that hard. Through music you both encouraged the young to follow their dreams. Keep those thoughts with you doing the tough times and you will make it. With God's blessings and God's love.

Mrs. Hytche was one of my most memorable and unforgettable childhood teachers. I was privileged to be one of her third grade students at Beveridge Elementary in 1971. Mrs. Hytche was very inspiring and had a very comtemporary amd innovative style of teaching. I clearly remember how we would spend many long afternoons singing and learning new songs and talking endlessly about our hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future.She was a young teacher during a time of unsettling and historic change in the city of Gary as well as throughout the country and the concerns of the children were many. She would always approach all of our questions with a calm and loving demeanor and made us feel that everything was going to be allright. I know that I speak for many when I say that she has made a very positive and influential impression in the lives of many of her students. We love her and appreciate her for her great dedication and outstanding service in the Gary Community Schools.

May God Bless the Hytche Family during this time of sorrow and bereavement.

I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Hytche. She was my music/choir teacher (and favorite teacher) at Edison Middle School from 1979 to 1982. Mrs. Hytche was truly dedicated to her craft and students. Working with the school choir was more than just a job to her. It was obvious that loved what she did. She had a kind, loving and warm spirit. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.
