Joan Bryant-Berry, the daughter of Susie and Joe Bryant was born on January 20, 1931 in Pulaski, Tennessee. After the family moved to Gary in 1942, Joan attended schools in Gary and began her career working as a student assistant in the administrative offices of Roosevelt School. She graduated in 1949 and on September 3, 1949 she married Ernest Scott Berry.

Soon after their marriage, she joined The Church of God in Gary and eventually began her dedicated volunteer secretarial services to its ministry. Mrs. Berry balanced her church ministry alongside her 56-year career as an administrative assistant and secretary for the Gary Schools at Beckman Middle School and Roosevelt High School. Although no children were born to the union of Joan and Ernest, Joan was forever the loving spiritual guide and supporter to all of her family members, friends, coworkers, church members and countless children in her Gary Means Manor Community, at her churches and at the schools where she was employed. Mrs. Berry leaves to cherish her memory her beloved Sister-in-law, Betty Bryant and a host of loving nieces, nephews, close friends and church members. Visitation Service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. at The First Church of God, 134 East 43rd Ave, Gary, IN. Her Memorial Service will be at 11am.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Joan and Ernest Berry Scholarship Fund at GEDF, Inc., PO Box 641257, Gary, IN. 46401

To the family of Joan Bryant Berry: I offer to you my condolences. People often say that someone "is beautiful inside and out", in Joan Berry´s case, no truer words were ever spoken. Joan was a true Christian Lady. She loved GOD and she demonstrated it in the kind and loving way that she interacted with people. We all know where she is and that should give you comfort. May GOD bless and keep all of you safe until you meet her again.

Sincerest condolences to the family of Mrs. Berry. She was a good friend of my grandmother Mary Griffin who also worked as a secretary at Roosevelt. Mrs. Berry was a classy and kind woman who made us "students" feel so special. She will be greatly missed.

Prayers and condolences to the Berry family. She was a classmate of my mom and lifelong family friend. It was such a pleasure to also be a member at First Church where she championed education thru the Berry Scholarship. I will forever remember her smile and warm hugs.

My sincere condolences to her family. We've lost a beautiful person here but heaven has gained a beautiful soul. I will always remember Mrs. Berry & how much time she spent caring for new students who needed help with their lockers, she was the go to person for that in Mr. Tatum's office. She was always very courteous & nice. May the Lord grant her eternal rest.

Only God knows how many students, parents and teachers Mrs. Joann Berry helped along the way at Roosevelt High School, probably too many to count! I´m so thankful to have been one of all three at some time in my life. Her beautiful smile, her kind words of wisdom and prayers, replacement of lost lunch money and so much more. - Was her trademark! It´s difficult to think of our alma mater without thinking of Mrs. Joann Berry. Her light shines all over this country now though the numerous lives she touched. May her love and kindness continue to spread and grow as she has triumphantly entered our Father´s Kingdom! She was so loving, so loved and so lovely! Joann Grandberry Colby Wilson, Dallas, TX

To the family of Mrs. Berry my sincere prayers and condolences go out to each of you. My eldest sister JoAnn Preston Sams worked with Mrs. Berry at the "Velt". They were not only coworkers but also the best of friends. Mrs. Berry was by far one of the kindest and charming people I've known in my lifetime. She had the kindest Spirit and such a beautiful smile to be remembered by many. May you rest in Peace Dorothy Preston

What a phenomenally kind and generous spirit! Mrs. Berry touched our lives in so many ways. She was a caring friend and classmate of our parents, Warren and Amelia (Austin) Hamer, at "The Velt." And, as our neighbor who lived just across the street, we were among the many Monroe Lane kids Mrs. Berry encouraged and supported through the years. It was common for her to stop by our house just to see how everyone was doing. When our own dear mother passed, Mrs. Berry gave each of us a crystal cross. So thoughtful! That's the kind of person she was. She will be missed. But now the heavenly host has a new addition! Rest in peace, Mrs. Berry!
