John P. DeVries

1935 - 2014

DeVries, John P. 79, of Nashville, formerly of Portage, IN, passed away at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. John was born on February 17, 1935 in Chicago, IL to the late Fred and Elizabeth Laninga DeVries. He married Nancy J. Madsen, who preceded him in death on September 17, 2009 and was the owner of DeVries Tire Company in Michigan City. John was a coach, referee and mentor to many children. It was his passion to teach the rules of the game, and life. In keeping with John's wishes there will be no services and cremation is planned. John is survived by his children, Scott (Debra) DeVries, Peggy (Richard) Hanley, and Donna DeVries; five grandchildren, Mandy Hastings, Jaci Jones, Amanda Johnson, Sydney Peck, and Mitchell DeVries; and 7 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years; his parents, Fred and Elizabeth DeVries; son, Glenn A. DeVries.
