Joseph-
Please say hello to each of my Mount Carmel 1965 classmates who were killed in Vietnam - Tom Connolly, Jim Claire, Pat Sweeney, Don Mate, and Tom Bromley. You can organize a pep rally for the Caravan soccer team with them. Be sure to invite Reverend (Captain) Aquinas Colgan and the other MC alumni killed in action in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Most of them would be surprised that there is a Caravan soccer team. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is watching over and protecting your young family.

Beloved Cousin Joseph

Today is a very sad and somber day for so many families. As a young child I remember Memorial Day was a day off of school, bbq in the backyard and a visit to the cemetary, to take flowers and a flag to my dad's grave, as a WWII Veteran. I was too young to fully understand the meaning of War. Now, living in a time where we have been at war, in multiple countries, fighting & defending freedom...allows me to understand that freedom is never free. The casualty list in reality would be far greater..because when a mother or father loses a son or daughter serving in the military, they also become a casualty. Their lives are forever changed. Although they continue here on earth, their minds and hearts are in heaven with their children. I know this because I experienced it when my mother lost my brother. Children are precious gifts from God. It reminds me of when Mary reflects back in time when she raised Baby Jesus. Parents are suppose to enjoy and experience a full life from their children. But that is not always so. So today, Memorial Day, 2010. I pay tribute to you and Clint, for your service, your dedication and your loyalty to your country. I ask our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to bring peace and comfort to your parents and to all parents who have lost a son/daughter in any war. May the grace of God be with you and Clint, may he shed his light over you and Clint and allow your families to seek him and find some comfort in knowing you two have gone home to be with our heavenly Father.

I love you Joe. I think of you all the time. I pray that your mom, Clint's mom, and my mom...find peace to allow them to move forward, day by day and to cherish the moments they had with their sons..and someday very soon, we will all be reunited in the after life.

Love,

Cynthia

Beloved Cousin

I was thinking of you today as our family has lost another member, your grandfather. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. My mother often said that he was such a good brother to them and an excellent son to their mother. She said as young teens, she remembered how he took such pride in his appearence. As a small child, I remember how passionate he was about his perfectly manicured yard. He used to share with me, some of his arts&crafts projects. It brings me peace to know you & your cousin Christopher, now have both your Grandparents with you. God bless you all and may you all rest in peace in Eternal Life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Your cousin.

Dear Joe,
Not a day goes by that I don't think about you, especially when I see your sons. Jacob is like a little image of you, and Noah has your feisty spirit. They see your pictures and know you are their Daddy. You were a big part of my life for the seven years that you and Alison were together. I loved you as much as I loved her and all my other grandchildren, and you knew that. A year ago today a part of all your family died with you, but we will always keep you in our hearts, as we try to go on with our lives without you. You will live on through your sons and never be forgotten by those who loved you.

I can't believe that it's been a year since you were called home. I think we're all still in shock. There is not a day or even an hour that goes by that we don't think of you. We love and miss you so very much. Alison is doing a great job with boys, but the 3 of them are really missing you as we all are. Jacob and Noah are getting so big and we are so grateful that we have them to carry on your life. They are like you in so many ways.

It's still so hard to comprehend that you're no longer here. We still miss talking to you every week. While you were in DC and even Germany our weekly calls were the constant. We are so proud of the man that you became. You were a great brother, husband, father, uncle, son and friend.

Katie was just saying how much she was missing you. You were the only one that could soothe here when she was irritable as a baby. You are definitely still her favorite.

We are coming to Arlington soon to see you. We all love and miss you so very much Joe. You are in our hearts always and forever.

Not a day goes by that I dont think of you. I keep your memory locked away in my heart with my dad, my brother, and my abuelita. I take you with me whereever I go. I always have a space for you at church, right next to me.

I plan on going to see the Cubs in spring training this year. I know, we are White Sox fans but your wife is a Cubs fan so Im going to go and take you with me. We'll root for the Cubs anyways!

Well hunny bunny, tomorrow would have been our 4 year anniversary. I miss you every day. The boys are getting so big and I know you can see them growing up and I wish you were here. I see a little of you in them with all the different things they do. Jacob chews his finger nails just like you, and he HUMS while he eats. I miss teasing you about those things and now I don't want to stop Jacob from doing them because they don't annoy me they just make me smile because it reminds me of you. They see your pictures all the time and say that they love you Daddy. You will always be in my heart and I will never forget you and the times that we had together. Love always your alican

Beloved Cousin Joseph

Tomorrow is Monday, May 25, 2009, Memorial Day. A day to commemorate U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.

I have been thinking about you a lot lately. I wrote Alison and saw the pics of your headstone. It truly breaks my heart to know you are gone. I am so proud of you and the huge sacrifice you made for our country. I remind people all the time that freedom is not free and the men & women of the United States Military provide us that gift. I recently saw the memorial service done in your honor at your grade school. It makes me so proud that so many fellow Americans continue to pay you honor and respect. It's servicemen/women like you, Pat Tillman, Chance Phelps, Lori Piestewa and so many more who went before and after you that tell the stories. It's important that we know the stories behind our servicemen/women. It reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice each and every one of you has made for us.

Happy 1st Memorial Day in heaven, cousin. You truly earned your wings. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ continue to bring your family peace and comfort, especially your mom, Elva. Cousin Mary and I will be attending a mass intention in your memory tomorrow at St. Mary's Basilica.

Eternal life is yours. Please give my Tina Fina a hug and a kiss. We love and miss you dearly.

Joe, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation. Like so many others you have volunteered to serve our country and protect the vary freedom America was built on. Please know Joe that you like so many other fallen brother and sisters in arms that you will never be forgotten and you are heroes to us all. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also paid the ultimate price on 5/6/08 while on a routine patrol in Anbar Province as an MP. His unit was ambushed and came under small arms fire and he was taken from us. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him and all our brave heroes serving in our armed services. I stand tall and salute you Joe and will forever honor the memory of you along with my nephew. To the Hernandez family words cannot express enough the pain both our families now must endure and my prayer is that the memory of your brave hero carry you through each day as you cope with this tragic loss. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know your loved one is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. From the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

Happy 25th Birthday Joe.

For your first birthday in heaven.

Birthdays In Heaven

Are there birthdays in Heaven?
Does the angel blow his horn?
Announcing to everybody
That this is the day you were born?

Can the stars be your balloons
And angel food your cake?
Presents wrapped in moonbeams
All the angels helped to make.

Birthdays meant so much to you
They were always a big deal
Birthday presents, lots of friends
And perhaps a special meal.

So I'll whisper a little prayer today
Asking everyone up above
To sing you a Happy Birthday song
And give you all our love...

We love you and miss you dearly.

The soldier stood and faced his God
which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns, can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent
because the streets are awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
when the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times
I shook with fear
And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears

I know I don't deserve a place, among the people here
They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand
I never expected or had too much,
but if you don't I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne,
where the saint's had often trod
As the soldier waited quietly, for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now you soldier, you've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's street,
you've done your time in Hell."

I was overcome with sadness for both families. Our lives will never be the same. As Josh's father said at his funeral,"Don't cry, He's Home". You must all be so proud of Joseph as I am of Josh. God Bless!

To the Hernandez family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Josephs' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

My deepest condolences on your tremendous loss. My son is in the Navy, while it's not the same branch of Service, we're really all in this together. Please remember you're not grieving alone, other military families feel your pain. Without brave men like Spc Jospeh Hernandez, America would not be the great country that it is today. God bless!

GoodMorning, Alison. I read about the loss of your husband in the NPR write-up yesterday. I am very glad that Joseph received a full honors burial. My son-in-law, Robert Durbin, fought for this right for Joseph as Joseph was so faithfully fighting for our country. I am a mother of 7 children and appreciate the sacrifices that you have already made and will continue to make in raising your children. If I can ever help you with some advice or just a good shoulder to cry on, please email me and I will send you my phone number and we can talk.

With the deepest of sympathy for the loss of your dear husband,
Sharon

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

The Final Roll Call

We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.

We think of you in silence
We often speak your name.

Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part

God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to S/Sgt Joseph Hernandez our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joe. And to Joe it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing terrorist forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Joe, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Joe’s family and loved ones.

Heaven's Heroes

Don't cry for me as I lie in repose, dying for freedom is what I chose. There isn't any pain or suffering anymore, because I've just walked through Heaven's door. Here everything is brand-new, I'm with my brothers, who were proud to die for freedom too. As you stand before me don't weep, it is just my body that is asleep... My spirit soars high above, where I'm surrounded, by angels and God's love. Thank you for the respects you pay, I just want you to know, I've gone home today. My job here on earth is done, and my life in Heaven has just begun.

I'm In A Better Place

Mom and Dad please don't worry about me cause I'm in a better place. Heaven is beautiful and it is full of God's grace. I know you are hurting because you miss me. But please don't stop living because I am happy and free. Don't be too sad because I am in a much better place. The war was horrific and I am with Jesus whom now I embrace. You just can't imagine the things that I see. I am with my war buddies and we are finally free. Don't give up because you know I am in a better place. God has prepared my mansion up here in this space. There is no pain and there are no more tears. God has taken away all of my fears. Do spread the word that I am in my heavenly home. Please let everyone know that I am not alone. I see all my loved ones and there is always light. There are angels everywhere and Jesus is just in sight. Mom and Dad I'll be here waiting to see you someday. But you know I died for freedom and the US of A. Please know that Jesus is just a prayer away. Just pass around the word that he will be coming back one day!

Those we Love remain with us,
for Love itself lives on.
Cherished memories never fade,
because one loved is gone.
Those we Love can never be,
more than a thought apart,
for as long as there’s a memory,
they live on in our heart...

no other words can express my pain for our loss, your loss...it was too soon, but Joe is on Gods hands.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. Sorry we couldn't get there to be with you all. God may have taken your man but in all our hearts he was a hero. He now has joined my dad, a WW11 Vet, Army 32nd Division, who also with many other men and women who fought for all of us to be safe.
