Kazys G. Ambrozaitis, MD, age 97, of Chesterton, IN passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Kazys is survived by his wife Maria of 63 years; daughter Ramune (John) Fry of Menlo Park, CA; daughter Audrone Ambrozaitis of Porter, IN; granddaughter Alexandria Lina Fry; brother Steponas (Eugenija) Ambrozaitis in Lithuania; sisters-in-law Gertruda (Juozas) Ambrozaitis and Janina (Leonas) Ambrozaitis in Lithuania; sister-in-law Aldona (Juozas) Brizgys of Lemont, IL; brother-in-law Antanas (Nijole) Pupius of Chicago, IL; brother-in-law Juozas (Nijole) Pupius of Los Angeles, CA; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by parents Kleopas and Pranciska Ambrozaitis; brothers Leonas (Janina) Ambrozaitis and Juozas (Gertruda) Ambrozaitis; sister Bronislava (Jonas) Jakelaitis. Kazys Ambrozaitis was born in Naukaimis, Lithuania on April 23, 1918. From 1941-1944 he was an active participant in the partisan resistance movement against the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. In 1944 the currents of war swept him to Germany, where he earned an MD and also a PHD from the University of Tubingen, Germany. In 1949 he immigrated to the US. In the mid 1950s he completed 2 years of his residency in radiology at Sloan-Kettering division of Cornell University Medical College and finished his residency in Cleveland. He served as a doctor in the US army from 1953-1955, with the rank of captain, while stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He moved to Northwest Indiana in 1959 when he accepted a position at Methodist hospital in Gary, IN and formed Broadway Radiology, Inc. soon thereafter. His wife Maria, and two daughters, Ramune and Audrone, joined him in Indiana in 1960, ultimately settling in Dune Acres where he has lived for more than 50 years. From 1962-1985 he was Medical Director of the Radiology Department at Methodist Hospital; from 1972-1973 he was President of the medical staff at Methodist Hospital; he was instrumental in the planning of the new Methodist Hospital in Merrillville, IN; and he continued to work as a radiologist at both hospitals into the 1990s. Throughout his life, he was very involved in cultural, political, and philanthropic activities in the Lithuanian community, both locally and internationally. Visitation will be at 10:30 A.M. (CT) to be followed by a Mass at 11:00 A.M. (CT) on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at St. Ann of the Dunes Church, 433 W. Golfwood Rd., Beverly Shores, IN.
