Marcelle Gates

1922 - 2022

Marcelle Gates, 99 was born March 31, 1922. God called her home Thursday, January 20, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. Originally from Plantersville, Alabama, Marcelle was the first of her family to migrate to Gary, Indiana where she met and married Sam Gates, her husband of more than 52 years. She was a loving wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Marcelle was a faithful longstanding member of Zion Temple Apostolic Church until her death; she served as an usher, Pastor's nursing guild member, sang in the senior choir, taught Sunday school and was Church Mother of Zion Temple Apostolic Church where Bishop Donsero Reynolds serves as pastor. Because of her faithfulness to God, her parents, siblings and husband were led to Christ. Generations followed in her footsteps of giving their life to Christ. Marcelle is preceded in death by her husband Sam; parents: Pink and Daisy Blevins; sister Elnora Miree; and brothers: Cleophus (Elise) Blevins, Leon (Eloise) Blevins, and Horace (Laura) Blevins. She leaves to cherish her memories her loving children: Gary Gates, Bernice (David) Golden, Prentiss (Gloria) Gates Sr., Sam (Samantha) Gates Jr., Vanessa Bullock-Banks (John), and Grady (Darlene) Gates I; 21 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great grandchildren, 3 great great great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends. Visitation will be held Friday, January 28, 2022 beginning at 12:00 p.m. concluding with Family Hours from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A private funeral service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022; viewing at 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. All services will be held at Smith, Bizzell & Warner Funeral Home, 4209 Grant Street, Gary, IN 46408.
