Samardzija, Mika Age 89, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011. She was born in Knin, Dalmatia (Formerly Yugoslavia) to the late Stevo & Juja (Dukic) Raskovic on Jan. 25, 1922. Mika was married to the late Nikola Samardzija for 57 years. After the tragic times of WWII, together, they immigrated to the U.S. in 1951, and began raising a family in Gary, IN. She was a founding member of St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, and its Circle of Serbian Sisters. Over the years, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needle-point and was a remarkable cook and homemaker. In addition to her husband, her beloved daughter-in-law, Debora Samardzija, preceded her in death. Mrs. Samardzija is survived by 5 children: Michael (Cheryl), George (Deb), Bronco and Sam (Stephanie), and Sanka Samardzija; 9 Grandchildren: Cathy, Craig, Sandy, Samuel, Jeff, Jacob, Nikolas, William and Christina; Great-Grandchildren: Stephaniem Michael, Mila, Cameron, Goldie and Rex. Also, many other relatives, Kumovi and lifelong friends-here, and in the former Yugoslavia. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 29, 2011, Directly at 10 AM at St. Elijah Cathedral, 8700 Taft Street, Merrillville, with Rev. Aleksandar Novakovic, officiating. Interment, Calumet Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 PM at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, under Savich & Semplinski Directors. A Pomen Service will be offered at 7 PM. Thursday.
