On July 18, 2023, a community legend, Rodney T. Williams, passed away at age 68. He was a resident of Gary, IN. Rodney graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1973 and received a BS degree from Northwestern University. He was married to the late Latanya L. Williams before her passing in 2015. Rodney was a long-standing youth athletic coach in basketball, football, and track. His list of championship titles stems back to Gary CYO, Gary Running Rebels AAU Basketball, Gary Pop Warner Football, and 21st Century High School Basketball. Rodney is survived by his sisters, Lucia and Elizabeth Williams; children, Rodney and Shannon Williams; six grandchildren, and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, from 12-8:00 p.m., family hours from 6-8:00 p.m. at Guy and Allen Funeral Home 2959 W. 11th Ave. Gary, IN. Funeral service Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Haskins Williams Athletic Center 724 Washington St. Gary, IN. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park.

Rodney and I have one thing in common: We both have personally attended the Olympics. I wrote a book on how to pull off a trip to the Olympics, and Rodney followed one of my steps. I called him a "Rat" for doing it! Trust me: I was being very ironic when I said that! What I actually meant that he pulled off a genuine Coup d'etat when he did it!
