I had the pleasure of working with Sophie and Avance in the late 60's. Sophie and Avance were tireless in their support of their community. They helped establish the first Head Start program and inspired me and my collegue to start a program supporting the sister of children in the Head Start program. I remember Sohie's sweet potato pies (the best!), sold at the Pullman factory to raise money for Head Start and the girl's club. She was an inspiration to all of us and I remember her fondly.
