STEVE SOURIS Obituary
STEVE P. SOURIS
WWII War Hero and ExPOW made his final journey to freedom. Lt. Steve P. Souris born February 16th, 1918 to parents Peter and Pershephone Souris in Gary, IN died at home surrounded by his family on 4/29/10. He was a lifetime member of SS Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. At 17, Steve ing his way through the ranks of the "ring war" looking for a new battle to win each week as a 3 time Golden Gloves Boxing Champ. He was on his way to turning pro when the "fight for freedom" in Europe was calling. He received his airmen wings as a bombardier in 1942. His B-17 was shot down over Germany after many missions. He was held captive in German prison camps for 18 months and is well known for his 7 daring escapes. He returned to Gary and married Goldie Spaliaras for whom he cared in her illness and ultimate passing in 1970. He is survived by their three children, Celeste Hasara and her husband, Larry, Paulette Horrigan and her husband, Patrick and Peter Souris and his wife, Lisa all of Florida. Grandchildren: Kristen Hasara, Trisha Hasara, Steven Hasara, Lauren Souris, Tyler Souris, Ryan Horrigan and Tyler Horrigan. He is further survived by his sister, Irene Turpa of Chesterton, IN; brother, Manual Souris of Hobart, IN and nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his wife, Steve was preceded in death by his sisters, Sophie Kambis, Mary Turpa and his parents and in-laws. Steve moved to Florida in 1989 and has been a resident of Perico Bay Club in Bradenton, FL since 1991. Visitation is Monday, May 3rd, 2010 from 7-9 PM at Toale Brothers Funeral Home. 912 53rd Avenue West, Bradenton, Fl 34207. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. 7671 North Lockwood Ridge Rd. Sarasota, Fl 34243. Military burial with full honors at Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell. 6502 Southwest 102nd Ave. Bushnell, FL 33513. Steve was a true American Patriot. He asks that we continue his quest for freedom for our country and to honor our troops and veterans. In lieu of flowers he would prefer donations be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Though I don't know Mr Souris or any of the family, I would like to take a moment to let you know that he's a hero in my mind and heart for standing up for our country. There is never enough done or said for our military folks. Our troops ... always in my heart and prayers! God Bless Lt. Souris. May he rest in peace.

Dear Celeste and family of Steve,
We were blessed to be a neighbor (and Renny as a former POW) with Steve. It was our pleasure to provide a ride for him to the luncheon meetings occasionally. What a courageous guy he was! He enjoyed talking to us about some of his escapades! He should have written a book! You were such a faithful family, attending to him for all the years we knew him at Perico Bay. I have no words to ease the pain of his passing but your comfort is in knowing that now he is in the VERY PRESENCE of our glorious Lord and Savior! God Bless all of you.

It has been my great honor and privilege to know a man of Steve's caliber, integrity and true grit. He loved his country and his family even more. Paulette, may you and all your family be at peace with his soul's passing from this place into that great beyond where other loved ones greeted him and the Master said "Well done my good and faithful servant". Know that his love will always remain with you. Watching over you, protecting you, comforting you and reminding you to always to do the right thing--or else! With love and warmest of thoughts.

Celeste, Paulette and Petey,
I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Steve's passing. He was a great Uncle and best friend and brother in law to Uncle Tom.
The brother in laws are all together up there in heaven now, looking down upon us.

Paulette and family: I will remember your father as a gentle man; and as a gentleman. He would always say, "you really look good!" even if it wasn't true! What a kind, sweet soul. Dear Celeste, Paulette,Pete and all the extended family and friends who greive the loss of their beloved "Papu".
Steve has been my friend, advisor and employer for these past seven years. He was kind, generous, disciplined and brave. His integrity, bravery, honesty, sense of humor, knowledge of right and wrong, and fairness were only a few of the wonderful characteristics his person embodied. He has helped me in so many ways, that I have become a better person because of his guidence and personal commitment to help me become financially and intellectually independent.
I will miss him as I would miss a "best friend". The world's greatest little smile and twinkle in his eye will be forever cherished by those of us who were honored to call him "friend", Father or Papu.

Just a few words of praise for a truly remarkable man. My Uncle Steve could light up a room with his smile and his great laugh. He was a wonderful role model for all of us-- someone who loved his country, his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his brother and sisters. It was always a pleasure visiting with him and just being around him. I'll definitely miss him.

How can I ever describe the many joys of having your father, my Uncle Steve, as such an important person in our lives. His sense of humor, the twinkle in his eyes, his veteran's hats, his pride in his children and grandchildren, his love of his country, his devotion to his sisters, brother and brothers-in-law, his true affection for our beautiful Aunt Goldie and so much more set him apart as an extraordinary gentleman with an inner strength that will never be equalled nor forgotten.
Our memories of his many visits to Detroit and the laughter around the table with his sister/my mother, Mary, telling us their childhood stories of our spunky yiayia and gentle papou can never leave our hearts. His warm welcome and genuine fondness for my husband, Jim, and their deep conversations about business, mechanics, car washes and our great country were appreciated more than anyone will ever know.
Until we meet again, precious Uncle Steve, we will love you forever. May God grant your family strength and every blessing.

Celeste,Paulette,Pete,& family. Deepest sympathy & prayers. I have nothing but great memories of the Souris family from the old fountain ridge days. As a child playing w/ Pete in the house.(hotwheel collection). I still remember to this day the picture of the backside of your Dad where he was flexing. He look like a total muscle man. He had my respect then. He has even more respect from me now after reading what was written about him. He is an American hero! Just also want to say, He did a great job of raising you kids. God Bless and watch over my Blessed Uncle Steve. he was so kind to me. I have the fondest memories of him. I remember when he would take Pete, my Brother Dan and myself fishing. Particularly I Remember the private lake and slide! God Bless my Uncle and I know his spirit is in Heaven along with my aunt Goldie.

Being in Ministry,I have heard it said, He or she is a man or woman of God.
My Question is? Can you see God in the man or woman?
I share this thought this way, to express how I seen and knew Steve P.Souris.Haven't never met the Man but through his daughter.
Listening to her speak and live as He taught her, his ways of life.
Showing kindness,gentleness,love,being honorable,To fight and take a stand for others as well as self,to face fear and the world head on.
To love God and your Country as Christ dose.
To be a buddy,a true friend,a teacher, a sister,wife.A person you can depend on when you need to be lifted,or just need a ear to listen.
This is the reason this man was a hero to me,because of what his daughter has shown me.I have been blessed to see him and know of him through Paulette.This to me truly was a man I could see God in.
It is because of men like Steve P.Souris we have lived and enjoyed the freedom, to love God and live in this Country.So I can say, I seen Christ because I seen Him in Steve P.Souris
May Gods blessing and my heart felt condolences be with his Family.As I know in my heart, God open His arms to receive this son home to be with Him.

A beautiful tribute to Uncle Steve but as the oldest of the Spaliaras clan -- I must add -- he was a wonderful husband to our Goldie; a great son-in-law to the Spaliaras family and a great uncle. He was loved by his family and -- equally -- by the Spaliaras family.
I am old enough to remember his courting our Goldie. I would hide in the dining room while Uncles Steve, Tom and Mike and my Dad, Nick, would play cards. Uncle Steve always sat with his back to the window so he could watch Goldie walk in with refreshments and walk back into the kitchen. Even at a young age, I saw the love as their eyes met.
After our Goldie was gone, his eyes lit up the same way as he looked at Celeste, Paulette and Peter and even more when he looked at his grandchildren.
I love you Uncle Steve and I can see the love in Aunt Goldie's eyes as she welcomes you to Heaven. My Dad and my uncles are smiling, too, because you make it four around the cardtable once again.
To my cousins and children, cry as you think of all the wonderful memories. Stay as strong as he was as you go through these tough days ahead. Please remember that we are all going through the same thoughts because we are family -- and we will all miss Uncle Steve.
