Virginia Gianikos Obituary

VIRGINIA "GINGER" GIANIKOS Age 86 of Gary passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005. She was the former owner of Rainbow Restaurant in Gary at 4th Place and Broadway. A lifetime member of SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. A longtime past President of the Ladies Kalymian Society. She served under 5 Mayors in Gary as Conservation Officer for 30 years. The recipient of City of Gary Employee of the Year in 1976; Outstanding Citizen of Gary Urban Enterprise Association in 1995; past member and Board of Directors of Urban Enterprise Association; Precinct Committeewoman from 1958 to 1994. She served as 2nd Vice Chairman of the Lake County Democratic Association. Preceded in death by her sister, Ann Plotkin; 2 brothers, Lee and Chris Atsas. Survivors: daughter, Sophia Gianikos of Gary; 2 sons, Constantine (Cathy) Gianikos of Martinsville, Indiana, Nick (Maureen) Gianikos of Merrillville; 2 grandchildren, Steve (Gina) Gianikos of Park Ridge, Illinois, Margie (Dr. James) Heck of Greenwood, Indiana; 3 great grandsons, Christopher and Alex Heck and Nicholas Gianikos. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at Rendina Funeral Home, 5100 Cleveland St., Merrillville. Prayer service Friday at 7 p.m. She will be taken directly at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to SS. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral for services at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ted Poteres officiating. Entombment in Calumet Park Mausoleum.
