Alan Grossmann Obituary

Grossmann, Alan D.

Alan D. Grossmann, age 57, passed away unexpectedly on January 2, 2013, in Appleton. Alan was born October 11, 1955 to Orville and the late Bernice (Brazen) Grossmann in Chicago, Illinois. On June 27, 1998, Alan was united in marriage to CarolAnn Marsiano. He was an avid sportsman. Alan loved the Cubs and was a collector of sports memorabilia. He owned "The Card Shoppe" in Little Chute, where he shared his enjoyment of sports with others. Alan was a proud member of the NRA and held the title of Benefactor. Most recently, he was President of Tactical Shot, Inc. and enjoyed being a firearms instructor.

He will be sadly missed by his wife CarolAnn, his children; Alana (Dan) Scharenbroch, Katy (fiancé Shane Murphy) Grossmann and Alan O. Grossmann, his grandson, Wyatt Scharenbroch and his father, Orville Grossmann. Alan will be also missed by his beloved dogs, Holly and Nicky and his cats, Shadow and Ju-Ju and grand-puppy Duke.

A memorial service for Alan will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, with the Rev. Daniel Thews officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 10:00AM, until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers and other tokens of sympathy, memorials to either the NRA or the Diabetes Association in Alan's name would be appreciated.

The first time I went into the range, I had no idea what I was doing. Al took the time to teach me the proper stance and grip, and he was patient, even though I was the least skilled person on the range. And every time I went in after that he would check up on my progress. He was a great man and he will truly be missed.

To Alans loved ones...
I only had a few experiences with Alan however, they were all unforgettable. I first met Alan at the range 6 years ago when he was training another man. He gave me some shooting pointers and slipped me his card. A few months later i put a group of gentleman together and we took his gun safety class. Alan was by far the most chilled out gun advocate to live. He loved teaching others about firearm safety and self protection. Wow, Alan was such a kind and unique soul.
May G-d bless his soul! My love, prayers and energy are with his family and friends at this time! Alans' passing was a major loss for everyone, not only his family. RIP

April 8, 2013

I was shocked to see Alan's Obituary posted at the Maxon Gun Store website. I was so lucky to have met him and learn proper safety technique from him. He was patient, caring and competent. He was such a good man. I shall miss him also.

To Al's family. It took me a long time to think of how to sum up my thoughts about Al. I knew him from the range. I was a police officer for 30 years and when I retired I had to qualify to continue to carry a gun. I wasn't very good at shooting. In 45 minutes Al taught me more than i had learned in 30 years. My son (also a police officer) and I kept going to the range and really looked forward to our time spent with Al. He was unmatched as a teacher but that was only a small part of it.
Al was a friend. He spoke often of his family and was so very proud when Wyatt was born. We were about the same age and we would compare stories about the kids development and exploits. Al was funny, kind, and tough all wrapped up into one. He could kid with everyone and tell a great story. But on the range he was all business and safety was first in his mind. And he was a patient teacher who really felt pride when one of us would improve in our skill.
I was just devastated when I learned of Al's passing. The world is a little less interesting without him for sure and all that knew him will feel the loss. I feel very fortunate that I got to know Al. Tell his grandson that his grandfather was a great man indeed.

Al was a very friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced individual. He made my friend and I feel very welcome in his home during one of his classes. Although, that was the first time we'd been introduced to him, it was evident that he was great person that could talk to anybody. The self defense world is truly losing one of its finest instructors. Rest well, Al. May your legacy continue to inspire and train us "Sheepdogs".

Al was a great instructor and friend. He was quick with a joke and a smile as well as being serious about teaching safe shooting. He was quick to point out if you were shooting wrong and would help you to correct it. I took his class in his home and we became fast friends. You will be missed. Rest in peace my friend...

Although I only knew Al in his professional role, he gave off a very respectful and friendly presence. He was the one who first taught me how to shoot and I can gladly say that I have kept up with my love for shooting to this day. RIP sir and my prayers go out to Carol and the kids.

I only just learned today of Al's passing, he will be greatly missed. He taught me the fundamentals and made the learning experience a lot of fun. During my range test, Al spotted a man endangering us all at the range and attended to the matter immediately. Safety always came first. He will be missed for his knowledge and his great personality. I will be keeping your entire family in my prayers and hope that you will find comfort in remembering the many special moments you shared together with him.

Al was the best firearms instructor that I have ever met, and it was clear how much he cared about and enjoyed teaching others. I had the pleasure of meeting Al at the Maxon gun store and range near Chicago, and also when he taught the NRA Basic Pistol Course that I needed to obtain my Permit to Carry Weapons in Iowa. The wisdom that Al shared stuck with me - and helped encourage me to become an NRA instructor myself. Some of what that he taught me now makes its way into the classes that I have given to enable law abiding citizens to obtain their own Permit to Carry Weapons in Iowa. In that way, and many others, Al will live on. You were a great man, and we will miss you Al. Rest in peace.

He will be truly missed. We need more guys like Al in this world. I'm sure he's looking down from the big range in the sky and smiling at everyone's thoughful comments. Rest in peace my friend.

In my opinion Alan was a caring, perceptive, and sharp guy with many talents. I met him through Maxon's en route to getting my gun license, and had some classes with him. We also had an IL/WI connection where we had lived in the same places (Fox Cities, and then Des Plaines). This is very saddening. Prayers out to his wife and family, I am sure he is in a better place. He will be loved and missed by many.

I am sure heaven is now a much wilder place with Al in it...

I loved working with Al - he cared more about getting the job done than any rules or procedures. As good as he was in creating stress - he was even better at relieving it. He made work fun.

The saying goes - A friend will bail you out of jail. A good friend will bail you out and pick you up. A great friend will be on the bench next to you in jail saying, "man, that was fun."

Al was a certainly a great friend.
