McDermot, Gerald D. "Gerry"

Gerald D. "Gerry" McDermot, age 84, died on 15th, October 2014. Gerry was born March 11th, 1930 in South Milwaukee, WI; son of the late Robert G. and Irene A. (Meszaros) McDermot. He received his Bachelors degree from UW- Milwaukee and his Masters degree from UW- Madison. He came to Appleton to be the first principal at Horizons Elem. School, He, also, served as principal in the Fond du Lac School system for 16 years and spent 15 years in the Racine School system. The highlights of his career were, being selected as National IGE Principal of the year and selected by the Japanese Ministry of Education as visiting scholar at its National University, Hyogo University in Yashiro, Japan. Gerry, also, served as vice-president of the Wisconsin Education Assoc. for three years and also, served as a member of the committee that designed and implemented the WEA Trust program.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Kathy; two daughters, Geri K. (David) Bourget, Oconomowoc, WI; Marta L. (Ken) Kolosso, Omaha, NE; three sons: Robert (Maria), Fond du Lac, Michael (Jennifer), Kaukauna; Lee (Joan) Appleton; ten grandchildren: Stephanie, Kirsten, Logan, Connor, Brenna, Andrew, Ian, Keely, Jonah and Benjamin. He is further survived by his brother, James (Terri) McDermot, Nashua, NH. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Robert.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2014 at St. Pius X Catholic Parish, 500 W. Marquette Street, Appleton, with The Rev. Thomas J. Farrell officiating, Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. Gerry's family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.

Gerry's family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Willow Lane and the nurses of Heartland Hospice for the care and compassion given unto Gerry and his family.

Gerry was a wonderful neighbor on Pershing St. and mentor to my son, Nick, when he worked at Pro Golf. He took a special interest in my son and I will always appreciate his caring ways!

Our father, Les Chaloupka, was a Fond du Lac elementary principal with Gerry. I was a teacher at Horizons School with Gerry. He always helped teachers, parents, and children know that "together we are better".

I had the great pleasure of working with Gerry as an administrative colleague with the Appleton Area School District and in some consulting roles. He was an exceptionally caring man. I recall a couple of occasions where I was having a tough time of it; Gerry could see that, and he offered me an ear when I needed it most. I shall always remember and honor this fine man.

I will always cherish the memories I have of working with Gerry at Parkside School in Fond du Lac. He was always so supportive of his teaching staff and always willing to listen and to help us when needed. My condolences to kathy, his beautiful wife, his children and grandchildren. Carol Laning
