Gilbert Mitchell Obituary

Mitchell, Gilbert E.

Gilbert Edward "Gib" Mitchell, age 89, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Theda Clark Medical Center. He was born on July 18, 1925 in Neenah; son of the late Edward and Catherine Mitchell. He married Marilyn Gullickson on September 11, 1948. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1969. On March 14, 1970, he married Gloria Tessendorf.

Gib graduated from Neenah High School in 1943. He was proud to have graduated high school and become a fighter pilot the same year at the age of 17. He honorably served his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot and flight instructor during WWII. Gib worked for the Neenah Foundry for 38 years, retiring as the Pattern Shop Supervisor. He was a charter member of St. Mark's Ev. Lutheran Church and a founding member of the Fox Valley Muzzleloader Club. Gib was also a member of EAA, a 50 year member of the American Legion and a member of the Quarter Century Club of the Neenah Foundry. He was the 1971 Wisconsin State Champion in marksmanship with the pistol muzzleloader. Woodworking was his passion; he enjoyed building model airplanes, guns and muzzleloaders and also taught night school woodworking and drafting at the vocational college in Neenah.

He was a wonderful, caring husband, father and will be deeply missed by his wife, Gloria Mitchell, Neenah; son, Mark (Faye) Mitchell, Neenah; daughter, Carla Young, Neenah; grandson, Scott Mitchell, Kiel and by numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends. Gib was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; sisters: Mary Ann Smith, Elizabeth Clough, Margaret Bartel and a half-sister, Helen.

A Funeral Service for Gib will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Ev. Lutheran Church, 140 S. Green Bay Rd., Neenah. The Rev. Jon Gallatin will officiate. Family and friends may visit at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home on Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Full military honors will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah.

I only just read with sadness of the passing of Mr. Mitchell, that is how I always addressed him. My parents were quite fond of him and in my youth I enjoyed hearing what he had to say about airplanes and muzzle loaders. A true gentleman.
