Barton Jensen Obituary

Dr. Barton Foster Jensen, 73, longtime Rexburg resident, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at his home.

Barton was born March 31, 1937, in Castle Dale, Utah, to Foster Ray Jensen and Nina Barton.

He graduated from Utah State University and Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Ore. On Aug. 14, 1959, he married Carol Loosli in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

He began his optometry practice in Pocatello in 1961 but moved to Rexburg, where he practiced optometry for more than two decades. During his professional career, he was appointed to the Idaho State Board of Optometry by Gov. Cecil Andrus in 1978 and also served on the Idaho State Board of Examiners and on the Board of Directors for the Idaho Optometric Association.

Barton served for 12 years on the Rexburg City Council. He was an active member of the service organization Kiwanis International, serving as president of the Rexburg club and later as lieutenant governor of the Utah-Idaho Division 4 of Kiwanis International.

He loved sports of all kinds -- as a participant and spectator. Barton especially loved skiing and was fondly remembered by family and friends for his graceful downhill form. He was an active supporter of the Ricks College Athletics Department, donating time and resources to the booster club. He was an avid Brigham Young University fan.

Barton was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many leadership callings, including bishop of the Rexburg 10th Ward. Regardless of his calling, he always enjoyed reaching out to befriend and serve those around him. He served as a missionary with his wife, Carol, in the Salt Lake Temple Square Mission from 2003 to 2004.

He is survived by his wife; six children, Garth (Lisa) Jensen of Denver, Arnold Jensen and Corinne (Brian) Lloyd, both of Salt Lake City, Camille (Travis) Haws of Denver, Mitch (Trish) Jensen of St. Louis and Brett (Mindy) Jensen of Rexburg; 18 grandchildren; and two sisters, Anne Kelley of Draper, Utah, and Linda (Kent) Daly of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Rexburg 10th Ward, Rexburg East Stake Center, 387 S. Fourth East. A viewing will be held from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. He will be interred at the Pineview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018, or visit www.pdf.org.

We didn't know Bart well but feel like we did through our dear friendship with his son Brett and daughter-in-law Mindy. Through each small interaction we had with Bart we could tell he was a good man. Sending our love and condolences at this time.

Carol and family. We were saddened to hear of Barton's passing. Seems that as our families grow and the older generations pass away, we lose touch with other members of our family. We have always admired you and Barton and in reading the obituary, you have accomplished a lot together. We did make a donation to the Parkinson Foundation in the name of Jerald and Karen Barton Family. Our sincere love and prayers are for you and your family in this time of sadness. Isn't it wonderful that we have the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the knowledge of eternal families in our lives? Karen,Steven, Roger, Brent Barton.
