Darlene Marie Ackerman Sato, 79, of Idaho Falls, passed away Jan. 4, 2010, at her home. God called her home while her husband and children were at her bedside.
She was born March 1, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Jack Ackerman and Mary Gertrude Oreno Ackerman. The family moved to Idaho Falls when she was 5 years old. Darlene attended Hawthorne Elementary School and O.E. Bell Junior High School. She worked as a waitress at the North Hiway Cafe and Hudson's Cafe. She also worked as a store clerk for the Idaho Department Store.
Darlene married James Sato on March 9, 1948, in Walla Walla, Wash. They had a journey of almost 62 years together. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in the Primary for 17 years. She loved crocheting, sewing, knitting and crafts. When she started square dancing, it became her life.
Her grandkids were her pride and joy. Her great-grandkids came along and followed suit in teasing and tormenting her. She wasn't able to enjoy some of her grandkids, great-grandkids or the great-great-grandchild because of them living out of state. So they didn't get to bug her, and she didn't get to bug them as much as she would have liked to do.
She is survived by her husband, James Sato of Idaho Falls; children, Vickie (Dan) Mccord, Kerry (Rick) Wessells, Linda (John) Swendsen and Michael Sato, all of Idaho Falls, Sandra (Rick) Kirn of Billings, Mont., Pat (Dave) Simmons of Roy, Utah, and DeNise Cherry of Shelley; brothers, Ronald Ackerman of Menan and Richard Jack Ackerman of Idaho Falls; 24 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave. The family will visit with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park. Please accept my condolences on the loss of Darlene. James and Darlene are close friends of my father, Agie Harada. Mr. Sato was my high school shop teacher from 1980-1983. I am sure Darlene is resting peacefully and will be waiting patiently for all of us in the future. God bless the Sato family.

Dear James and Family: We are so sorry at the loss of Darlene. She was a wonderful person and friend and we loved her very much. Rex and I have some wonderful memories of Darlene and the fun we shared at square dances. We always knew the dance would be fun if we seen Darlene and James come through the door! Love your friends, Rex and Brenda Orgill
