Darrell Glenn Long, 72, our husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away with his family at his side Monday, Nov. 7, 2011.
Darrell was born March 31, 1939, in Lincoln, Idaho, to his parents, Glenn Christensen Long and Hazel Almeda Hymas. He was third of six children. He was raised in Ammon and graduated from Bonneville High School in 1957. There, he met his best friend and sweetheart, Sharon Andrus.
Darrell and Sharon were sealed for time and all eternity June 18, 1958, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They were married for 53 years. Darrell and Sharon resided in Taylor, Idaho, for the past 41 years, where they became fixtures in the community.
Darrell was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many callings. He loved the youth and served many years as a Scoutmaster and other assignments with the Boy Scouts of America. He had a great love for little children and many fondly called him "Grandpa Long." During his retirement, he served two church missions to Nauvoo, Ill., and the Willie Historical Handcart Site in Wyoming.
He made his living as a metal specialist and master craftsman. He worked for Idaho Steel Products, Bingham Mechanical, and Argonne National Labs. He taught classes for union men and at Eastern Idaho Technical College. He also owned and ran a small metal shop and tree business. He enjoyed creating many beautiful and useful metal items.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; and children, Becky (Mark) Butler, Natalie (Kelly) Sanders, Nikki (Steve) Mulder, Andrea (Neil) Blatnick, Lovenia (Robert) Warren, Kristan (Kim) Long and Jeannine (Jason) Conrad; brothers, Lester (Karen) Long and Gaylen (Nancy) Long; sisters, Ann (Fenton) Tyler and Maxine (Richard) Black; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak St. in Shelley. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Taylor/Jameston Chapel, 1101 East 1250 N. in Shelley. Interment will be at Taylor Cemetery, 720 E. 129 S. in Idaho Falls.
