I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Vernal for nearly all of my professional career. He and the other techs of his vintage made our role as supervising pathologists rather easy. His even temper and dry humor was a great asset.
As important as our professional relationship, was our love of the outdoors. I always looked forward to his return from a big hunting or fishing trip. I can remember he and Neil Griggs lugging a huge cooler filled with trout into the LDS Hospital. The grilled salmon feasts outside the labs backdoor were a summer highlight.
I feel fortunate to have seen and briefly spoke to Vernal at the gathering for Ginny Griggs. He will be missed.
