Ella Volcheck
October 18, 1927 - December 6, 2024
Ella (nee Prouty) Volcheck, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 97, on Friday, December 6th, 2024 surrounded by her family and her loyal and cherished cat, Titi.
Ella was born in North Creek NY, to the late Raymond and Suzie Prouty.
The proud mother of six children, Ella found her greatest fulfillment in nurturing and raising her family. Her love extended beyond her own children, touching the lives of every child she cared for with her warmth and generosity.
An accomplished baker, Ella filled her home with the aroma of her delicious cookies and pies. She was equally skilled in the garden, cultivating flowers and vegetables and keeping a fully stocked "root cellar" with rows and rows of canned vegetables, bins of homegrown potatoes, carrots and apples and homemade meats, pickles and jams.
Alongside her husband, Charles "Chuck" Volcheck, Ella ran the well-known Chuck's Foxx Lair tavern in the Adirondacks, a community cornerstone for many years. With her easygoing nature, she welcomed friends and travelers alike with a smile and a bowl of her famous homemade chili.
In her quieter moments, Ella expressed her creativity with crafting and crocheting and delighted young and old alike with her beautiful, crocheted dolls. Her hands were never idle.
Ella's life was a testament to the power of love, community, and resilience. She was deeply admired and adored by her family and all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the cherished memories of her family and the lives she touched.
She is predeceased by her late husbands, Charles Volcheck and Ralph Cook; siblings, Charles (Jessie) Prouty, Harold (Wilma) Prouty, Marie O'Dell, Marion (Jim) Pellerin, Murray (Helen) Prouty, and Belva (Cassius) Hitchcock; daughter, Kathy Gale; daughter-in-law, Judy Cook; and grandson, Stephen Cook.
She is survived by her children, Karen Rickman, David (Lynn) Cook, Larry Cook, Tom (Michelle) Volcheck, and Lisa (Rich) Coogan; son-in-law, Kenneth Gale; grandchildren, Rick, Beth, Wanda, Michelle, Joey, Charlie, TJ, Frankie, Lukie, and Sophie; as well as seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be in the spring at Bates Cemetery.
As we say goodbye, we remember the words from her favorite song: "They will all come to greet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly as they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home"
Ella will forever remain in the hearts of her family, her friends and the Adirondack community she called home.
Condolences may be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or through
