Gary James Fitzgerald, age 70, of Easton, New York, passed away on February 20, 2026, at home surrounded by his family.

Gary was born on December 4, 1955, in Jamaica, Queens, to Eileen and Robert Fitzgerald. From an early age, he was known for his intelligence, confidence, dedication, and generous spirit. He was deeply loyal to those he loved and was a steadfast, supportive friend who gave freely of himself without ever expecting anything in return.

A graduate of Cornell University, Gary devoted his career to strengthening healthcare systems across Upstate New York. He played a central role in merging regional hospital organizations to create the Iroquois Healthcare Association (IHA), a collaborative network serving hospitals and health systems across 32 counties. Under his leadership as CEO, IHA became a premier advocacy organization supporting more than 50 hospitals and advancing regional healthcare data and workforce development initiatives, including the Caring Gene Workforce Initiative. Through his vision and tireless advocacy, Gary worked to improve healthcare access and strengthen communities across New York State.

In his personal life, Gary found great joy in music, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with family and friends. He cherished returning to his family's lake house in Aurora, New York, on Cayuga Lake, where he found peace and connection with loved ones. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, Hank and Lucy, who brought him immense pride and happiness and referred to him and wife Kim as Bob and Honey.

Gary is survived by his wife of forty years Kim Fitzgerald; his father, Robert "Bob" Fitzgerald; his children, Emma Fitzgerald (Chris Gerardi), Eleanor Fitzgerald (Samuel Luke), Madeline Fitzgerald, and Samuel Fitzgerald; his grandchildren, Hank and Lucy Gerardi; and his siblings, Brian Fitzgerald (Lissa Stevens), Michael Fitzgerald (Ann Fitzgerald) and Maureen Fitzgerald, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Fitzgerald,

A funeral Mass will be held Friday, February 27, 2026, 11 am at St. Patrick's Church on Main Street in Aurora, New York. Arrangements made by Shakelton Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Native American Rights Fund in Gary's honor.
