George Traver Obituary

TICONDEROGA -- George Morgan Traver Sr., 98, of Ticonderoga, and formerly of Sabbath Day Point in Silver Bay, passed away Friday, June 29, 2007, at Moses-Ludington Nursing Home of Ticonderoga.

Born in Rhinebeck, N.Y., March 13, 1909, he was the son of the late Clarence and Lillian (Wilsey) Traver.

Mr. Traver was a graduate of Rhinebeck High School and a 1934 graduate of Springfield College.

He married Dorothy E. (Anderson) Traver on June 24, 1937. They lived in Staatsburg until 1974, and were part-time residents of Sabbath Day Point in Silver Bay from 1960 until 1974, when they became permanent residents. They moved to Ticonderoga in 2000.

He was employed as a teacher, coach and administrator for the Anderson School of Staatsburg, for 42 years, before his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Traver was an active member of both St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg and, most recently, the Episcopal church of the Cross of Ticonderoga. He served on the Church Council and on the Wurtemburg Cemetery Association.

He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Rhinebeck, and was very active in many organizations, including the Hague Senior Citizens, Town of Hague Historical Society, and the Bloomer Valley Gun Club. He was a charter member of the Neighbors Gun Club of Rhinebeck.

He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Traver was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy E. Traver on Nov. 19, 2001; and also by two sisters, Dorothy Zigman and Gloria Odell.

Survivors include one son, George Morgan Traver Jr. of Kingston; one daughter, Sara Jean Vandersea and her husband, Howard, of Brunswick, Maine; two grandchildren, Deborah Vandersea, and Craig Vandersea and his wife, Nicole; and two great-grandchildren, Brenna Vandersea and Nathan Vandersea. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Monday, July 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the Episcopal Church of the Cross of Ticonderoga . The Rev. Marjorie Floor, rector, will officiate.

A graveside service will take place on Thursday, July 5, at 1 p.m. at the family plot of the Wurtemburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Ticonderoga Fire Department, Ticonderoga, NY 12883; or the Episcopal Church of the Cross, 129 Champlain Ave., Ticonderoga, NY 12883.

My Dad (Bob Streeter) worked for Mr. Traver's several years ago and always spoke very fondly of him. As children, we used to go to my Dad while he was working as caretaker sometimes and we would have a picnic lunch with him there. I have fond memories of that. Sincerey Condolences, Regards
