Gerald Carruthers Obituary

Gerald "Jerry" Carruthers

November 30, 1936 - February 8, 2026

Gerald "Jerry" Carruthers, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the Springs at The Wesley Health Care Community. Jerry was born in Queens, New York, on November 30, 1936, the son of the late Sydney D. and Myrle Nina (Lucas) Carruthers. He married the love of his life, Stephanie Felock, and they spent 41 years together until her passing on June 14, 2014.

Jerry proudly served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge to return home and support his brothers in starting S.D. Carruthers Sons, Inc. in Argyle, N.Y. He was a principal of the family contracting business from its formation in 1950 and served as President at the time of his passing. Jerry spent his entire career running the family roofing business and was known for his integrity, reliability, and steady leadership.

In addition to his business career, Jerry served for many years as a trustee for the local painters union, a role that reflected the trust placed in his judgment and his commitment to working people. He approached both his business and union responsibilities with fairness, accountability, and a focus on long-term stability. Jerry was also a strong supporter of local charities and community organizations. He believed in taking care of his community, and his generosity made a meaningful difference to many causes close to home.

Outside of work, Jerry and Stephanie shared a love of traveling the East Coast, especially trips to Cape Cod. They also enjoyed attending antique auctions together, a pastime that brought them great joy and many lasting memories.

Jerry lived for his work and his family. He was known as the family historian, possessing an incredible memory and the ability to recall stories, names, dates, and cherished moments that others might forget. He was the one you turned to when something needed to be set straight. He enjoyed weekly early dinners at The Harvest and Ridge Terrace restaurants and was remembered for how he conducted himself-calm, honest, and dependable.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his loving wife, Stephanie; his brothers, Henry Donald (Liz), Robert, Warren (Betty), and George Carruthers; his brother-in-law, Dewey Powell; his half-brother, Sydney Carruthers; his half-sister, Audrey Pierremont; and his sister-in-law, Suzanne Gilman.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Joan Powell; his sisters-in-law, Dolores, Tina Carruthers, and Mary (John) Carey; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Springs at The Wesley Health Care Community, The Community Hospice Foundation, and the nursing staff at Saratoga Hospital for the care and compassion they provided.

Those wishing to memorialize Jerry may donate to The Saratoga Hospital Foundation for the Nursing Scholarship Program, 211 Church Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

At Jerry's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are being handled by M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 123 Main Street, Argyle NY 12809. For online condolences, please visit www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.
